King Cobra Swinging From Branch at MacRitchie Nature Trail Wows Visitors

A few visitors to MacRitchie Nature Trail witnessed the spectacular sight of a king cobra swinging from a tree branch on Sunday afternoon (Feb 21).

Stomp contributor Masnashzreen shared with Stomp a video of the snake swinging and dangling from a tree that he took at about 3.52pm.

He told Stomp that he made sure to keep a safe distance while taking the video even though there were other visitors who got closer to take photos and videos of the reptile.

In the video, people are heard exclaiming in awe.

"Adult king cobras are three to four metres-long on average so I made sure I was at a safe distance to experience it face-to-face while taking the video as it is the world's longest venomous snake," he said.

"I feel that hikers and joggers will be extra cautious in this environment where we don't know what is waiting for us.

"I'm lucky enough to experience this creature as usually, I would see it on the TV or on the web, but this time I got to see it with my own eyes.

"Am I considered lucky? I guess so."

Had read many decades ago, that they were one of the few creatures that would pursue humans

Water Moccasins and the Alligator Snapping turtle are aggressors. Believe it or not, a Hippopotamus will run after you--and you'd better be faster!

17 foot long—so a little more than three meters.

17 feet is more then 5 meters.

I think those are called cat-like reflexes. When cats sense danger, they jump away immediately and figure out what is going on later.

Was in Phnom Penh last year as a friend of mine runs an orphanage there.

What an eye opening place. Especially the killing fields and prison.

I just found out some info about my Dad’s first cousin who was KIA in Vietnam in ‘66 (he was a WW2 and Korean War veteran). His mother was my surrogate grandmother- wonderful lady. All I ever knew about him was his last name was Sexton. I went to the Wall in DC twice- looked for a possible match for him both times but never found it. My mother would never allow me to ask my Great Aunt any questions about him- he was her only child and she would get very upset at the mention of Vietnam. After a bit of research I know now what panel on the wall his name is- so the next time I go I will know where to find it. One sad side note- his son also died in the service of our country at the age of 37 (he was a Coastie who died in Washington Harbor in ‘91 after tending to a crew in distress).

I hear it’s changed a lot since I was there in ‘92 and ‘93. In some ways for the better, in some for the worse. I loved Cambodia and would love to go back for a visit, but can’t leave my elderly Dad. I hope you got to see some of the happy side, too. Yes, the prison and killing fields are quite hmm, is there a word for that? You know what I mean!

What amazes me is that Pol Pot happened in my lifetime, and that they left him live and die of old age.

China backed Pol Pot as their puppet to the point that in 1979 China invaded Vietnam as Vietnam was attacking Pol Pot.

The piles of human skulls was very moving. The children’s tree covered in ribbons where they beat the children to death and not waste bullets was sickening.
