“For reasons that are still under investigation, the convoy began to slow causing a chain reaction collision. One of the truck trailers was pushed forward into the cab causing fatal injuries to the driver,” CHP said in a news release.

A 26-year-old service member died at the scene. Another sailor in his early 20s has severe injuries and four other service members, two women and two men in their early 20s, suffered minor injuries, CHP said.

The surviving victims were taken to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital and Mission Hospital in Orange County for treatment.

First responders and personnel from CHP’s Oceanside area, Camp Pendleton Fire Department, United States Marine Corps Camp Pendleton Provost Marshal’s Office and the United States Marine Corps Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene.

The identity of the sailor who died has not yet been released.

What ever happened to the concept of following distance? The reason vehicles pile up is simple and never accidental. Anyone with a driver’s license is supposed to know this.

If you are a kid in the military you don’t need to have a state driver’s license. I was in a few dozen convoys. Little sleep. Lots of hangovers. Nonsense in loud vehicles.

I would also add that the kids driving are under constant pressure to keep up; to leave minimum distance to prevent the convoy from being broken. Civilian drivers cut in with little warning. There you are in a multi-fuel truck straining against a governor to keep up and a 20 year old chick in a Mustang cuts in ahead of the third truck ahead of you. Bingo.

There should be a draconian federal law to address that.

The law that applies to funerals should also apply to convoys.

Whatever that penalty, add $100K fine and mandatory prison time.

It’s not getting anywhere near the rabid coverage of illegal aliens killed in a collision. There’s the media for you.

I don’t know if there’s a law regarding funerals. Here in the Midwest, traffic always pulls over to let the funeral pass, but I think that is a matter of custom and good manners, not the law.

When I was a lad in the early 50s, when my family would take trips to San Diego from Long Beach, we’d travel down the only highway, 101, the Pacific Coast Highway and we’d often encounter military convoys. I think we pulled over to let them pass, but that may have been out of habit from the war years. I remember their always having their lights on.
