Just 72 years ago (not that long ago in the larger perspective of time), this was how a typical American family navigated the complexities of everyday life.

Sounds like Mr. Miller may have a girl on the side and that’s why he comes home so late on Friday nights. Mrs. Miller is getting more and more frustrated.

Was it the norm to wear a tie when visiting friends in the evening in 1949?
No sign this family had a TV set--I think they weren't that common in 1949.
When it came to "privileges" they failed to discuss how they were benefiting from white privilege. Probably because of their white fragility.

They may be going out for the evening away from the kids and traveling in one vehicle. Life was different before covid.
