I’m reminded of the charge that PETA has been kidnapping and killing people’s pets. Snopes deals with this in an interesting way admitting that PETA associates have done this and also saying “PETA workers do not routinely lure pets away from families for the sole purpose of euthanizing the animals.”
The routinely is the wiggle word. It steps back from simply stating that it is not PETA’s policy (so those doing so are violating same) and instead says they don’t routinely to so.
It is in fact a non-denial denial. It should have been easy to flatly say it was not PETA policy, but for some reason they didn’t do so.
I’m guessing the people of Snopes don’t know what PETA’s policy really is (I’m guessing there’s been little disciplinary action to those who stole and killed pets) if this nonsense has gone on enough times to even seem to be a thing, but they didn’t want to act like it is a thing just the same.
