The wreckage of TWA Flight 800 is set to be destroyed — nearly 25 years after the doomed aircraft crashed off the coast of Long Island, killing all 230 people on board.
For the last two decades, the reconstructed Boeing 747 has been housed in a Virginia hangar and used by the National Transportation Safety Board as a training tool for accident investigators.
But the federal agency on Monday announced it planned to decommission and destroy the wreckage, as its lease on the 30,000-square-foot Ashburn warehouse is set to expire.

You mean, the plane that got shot down? Yes, let’s destroy the evidence.
It’s been sitting in a warehouse for 25 years. Thousands of investigators have been over it. You think some new revelation is pending?
I’m surprised they’ve waited so long.
I flew into Dallas that day, checked into my hotel room, turned on the TV and this crash was all over the news.
No, the OLD revelations prove that it was shot down.
We must have been getting too close to the truth...
It didn’t crash.
It was shot down.
I saw footage of missile strike and there witnesses
Nice sunny day
The video never to be aired again after that night.
I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t destroy the wreckage. The truth is out there somewhere I’m sure. Documented in top-secret classified files perhaps never to be reviewed. Just like the JFK assassination; our government knows the truth.
Wasn’t that the plane that was supposed to fly to some South American country? I was supposed to take out a biology class on a birdwatching field trip that day, and we had to cancel because of a plane crash.
I saw it too. It was all over local NY news.
Possibly. Cold cases are routinely solved now using DNA technology which didn’t exist at the time of the crime. So yeah, there could still be information gained through technology we don’t have yet.
I met a guy several years ago who worked in that hanger. I asked him what he thought happened to TWA 800, He hesitated for a few seconds and then said “We f@@ked up that day.” By “we” he meant the US.
Ironic that the NTSB uses it for training since the FBI barred them from investigating the accident scene.
Yep - shot down by the US Navy and badly covered up.
I gave a copy of the FDR report to a friend years ago from Accuracy in Media. I showed beyond any doubt that the readings’ sudden drop was caused by an explosion *outside* the plane. Plus, all the witnesses, including pilots, did not see a mirage.
I called you no name, nor will I. If I still had it, I’d have been glad to send you a copy. My friend is a physics whiz, and all he could say was, “This really opened my eyes.”
It was Paris bound.
.
I too saw the missile video the day of the crash.
In September 2001, in an interview with Peter Jennings, George Stephanopoulos said, ““There are facilities in the White House, not the normal situation room, which everyone has seen in the past, has seen pictures of. There is a second situation room, behind the primary situation room, which has video conferencing capabilities. The director of the Pentagon, the defense chief, can speak from a national military command center at the Pentagon. The Secretary of State can speak from the State Department, the President from wherever he is, and they’ll have this capability for video conferencing throughout this crisis. In my time at the White House it was used in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, in the aftermath of the TWA Flight 800 bombing, and that would be the way they would stay in contact through the afternoon.”
Maybe Stephanopoulos misspoke, maybe not.
There’s zero chance that happened.
