105-year-old who recovered from COVID-19 credits gin-soaked raisins for breakfast

A 105-year-old New Jersey woman who survived both the 1918 flu pandemic and a bout with the coronavirus attributed her longevity to her daily ritual of eating nine raisins soaked in gin.

“Fill a jar. Nine raisins a day after it sits for nine days,” Lucia DeClerck told The New York Times.

Gin-soaked raisins are not among the recommended Centers for Disease Control and Prevention treatments for the virus.

DeClerck, born in Hawaii to Guatemalan and Spanish parents, eventually retired to a Manahawkin retirement community at 90. She learned she had tested positive for the virus on Jan. 25, her 105th birthday and the day after receiving her second dose of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine.

However, administrator Michael Neiman said she experienced few symptoms and was back to her room and usual routine within two weeks. On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said during a news briefing that he had had an “uplifting” phone conversation with her.

DeClerck’s son Phillip Laws, 78, said he was “very concerned” when he learned of her diagnosis, “but she’s got a tenacity that is unbelievable,” he added. “And she’s got that rosary — all the time.”

“At first she was a little apprehensive, a little scared, but she said, ʻGod will protect me,’” Neiman told the Times.

Although she likely contracted the virus before receiving her second dose of the vaccine, the shot also likely contributed to DeClerck’s recovery, as British studies have indicated even a single dose reduces the chance of hospitalization.

“Now all of us are rushing out and getting Mason jars and yellow raisins and trying to catch up,” DeClerck’s 53-year-old granddaughter, Shawn Laws O’Neil, who has dubbed her grandmother “the 105-year-old badass who kicked COVID,” told the Times.

I had an aunt who lived to 106. As far as I know she never touched a drop of alcohol.

Based on that extensive research, I don’t think I’m going to make it to 106.

My mother in law lived to see 93 and had 3 doubles every night. She told her Doctor and he said “Three?!” She said “one for each of my dead husbands.” True story.

Nice “story.”

However ..... It’s pure propaganda from the marketing/advertising department of the pharmaceutical companies.

“Step right up, folks. Get your vaccination right here! Come on everyone. Step right up! It’s good for you, it will save your life! See this woman here? Why she’s 104 years old and it saved her life!”

Not today, but maybe tomorrow.

All you would need is for Trump to come out against them, and Fauci and the CDC would publish their therapeutic recommendation in short order.

My cousin drank 3 full glasses of gin a day. She lived to be 105 and was still driving her Corvair.

So I daily take:
- 9 gin-soaked raisins for the flu.
- 8 oz of beer for indigestion
- 8 oz of red wine to decrease risk of heart disease
- 4 oz of vodka to lower cholesterol
- 2 oz of whisky(no “e’) for weight loss
- 2 oz of cognac to bolster the immune system

I am now healthy as a horse, but I have to go to these meetings every day...

Gin soaked yellow raisins have long been touted as a treatment for joint pain. However, they are one of the side dishes that can make a holiday table spectacular.

The divided relish trays were a high class means to offer guests all sorts of minimalist treats.

There is the pickled tray with gherkins, green and black olives, pickled beets, pickled peppers and marinated mushrooms.

The “cold” tray with carrot and celery sticks, cherry tomatoes. A more recent addition are Jicama sticks.

You can have a salted nut tray, a cheese tray, a fresh fruit tray, etc.

But finally you have your liquor dried fruits tray. Gin raisins, brandied apricots, bourboned cherries, rum prunes, vodka strawberries, and be sure to have candied citrus peel along side.

I’ve got a stockpile of boxes of raisins sitting in the Closet - like 15 pounds of them from the Food Pantry, They were passing them out for months.

Now if the ABC Stores would just start handing out the Gin I’d be set.

“My aunt died of influenza, so they said. But it’s my belief they done the old woman in. Yes Lord love you! Why should she die of influenza when she come through diphtheria right enough the year before? Fairly blue with it she was. They all thought she was dead. But my father, he kept ladling gin down her throat. Then she come to so sudden that she bit the bowl off the spoon...it wouldn’t have killed her. Not her. Gin was mother’s milk to her. Besides, he’s poured so much down his own throat that he knew the good of it!” — Eliza Doolittle
