A dad-to-be in upstate New York was killed when a device he was building for a gender reveal party exploded, state police said Monday.

Christopher Pekny, 28, was working on the device for his child’s gender reveal party in the Catskills town of Liberty when it blew up just before noon on Sunday, cops said.

“How many people have to die for these stupid gender reveal parties?”

If we just wear three masks and stay six feet apart...

No, you cannot have 10 kg of plutonium.

But it's for a gender reveal party.

Well, why didn't you say so? Are you sure you don't want to add some tritium to make it a thermonuclear gender reveal?

Wonder why they even have the anymore ... until the kid is five or six and its teacher tells it what gender it should be it doesn’t seem relevant to have a party. I guess in a clutch you could go with gray or some other neutral color.

These “gender reveal” parties are the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

In California, at one of these idiotic “reveals,” one of the persons attending accidentally set off a massive wildfire.

“Why is it SO DIFFICULT to find Republicans who agree with the 83% of the country which thinks women and girls should only have to compete against each other in sports?”

I don’t need to reveal jack for people to know my gender. Same for my wife.

'And what sort of devices are there, if they explode?'

It's like a strap-on jack in the box, with FFF powder......

I never understood the appeal of these parties for either the parents or the guests. I wonder what percentage of parents have them. We knew the sex of each of our four children before they were born and did not disclose it to anyone, including our closest friends and family members.

Since someone was killed and another injured with a homemade IED doesn’t that qualify as domestic terrorism?

Only if it occurred during the daytime. If it happened at night, Merrick Garland would give it a free pass.

My former downstairs neighbor wanted me to order gender reveal balloons for her, as she didn’t know how to order stuff on the internet. They were black, and you ordered ones with a pink or a blue card inside. Seemed inane to me.

Sounds insane to me too but better than homemade explosives.

Whatever happened to carbide cannons? I’m pretty sure they were safe and made a big boom. In the ‘60s they were advertised in comic books IIRC.

I reload pistol and rifle cartridges. A typical small pistol cartridge recipe uses less than 3 grains of smokeless powder. That is .194 of a gram or less than 7 thousandths of an ounce. This minute amount of powder is enough to propel a 100 grain 30 caliber to over 900 feet per second a velocity more than adequate to kill a person or animal. If there is a misfire in the pistol the reulting explosion can be powerful enough to cause serious injuries.

People without adequate knowledge of the power of explosives put themselves at great risk when they construct devices using materials that can be detonated. During my career my crews and I responded to a number of people who injured themselves while messing around with explosive materials.

Have any of you ever been to Liberty, NY?

I have, and not a place one wants to visit twice.

The inhabitants I encountered made Massholes seem nice.
