Me too, if you’re only talking about the stuff they did before Terry Kath died.
Peter Green Fleetwood Mac?
Obviously music is subjective. People like what they like. But when it comes to composition, arrangements, complexity and instrumental virtuosity Chicago is heads and tales above. Each band had three great vocalists so I’d that’s a tie. Also, I’m referring to the Terry Kath version of Chicago and the Buckingham/Nicks version of Mac.
For what it’s worth, Hendrix thought Kath was the best guitarist playing (better than himself).
Big fan of both. FM didn’t have the horns.
It’s almost apples v. oranges. When it comes to technical virtuosity and composition Kath wins. But, Lindsay had an incredibly powerful sound and beautiful tone that I’ve never heard anyone come close to. You really had to see him live to appreciate it. It al depends what most appeals to you. Ace Frehley of Kiss has been rightfully criticized for not having much in the way of guitar chops but the guy consistently came up with incredibly appealing riffs and solos which made the early Kiss stuff.
Hendrix later said pretty much the same thing on the Johnny Carson show about Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Which just goes to show Jimmy had pretty awesome taste in guitar players.
“How can the have such a debate without throwing Blood, Sweat and Tears into the mix?”
+1. Saw Chicago & BST twice. Chicago was great but IMO, BST’s horn section was far more powerful.
I have now. Thanks
Look at some of the videos of Buckingham fingerpicking.
Perhaps, I wouldn’t argue with you. But when it came to putting together horn arrangements for a rock band, James Pankow of Chicago was unmatched. Better even than the Tower of Power horn section, which is probably my favorite. Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan is sheer magic. (It includes the hits Color my World and Make Me Smile)
That was astounding.
I just downloaded Chicagovich III.
This is the Post, not the Times.
Over who sucks more?
Yeah, but there are lots of good finger pickers out there. LOL - when it comes down to it probably the best two popular guitar players of the 60s-70s were Glen Campbell and Roy Clark.
I saw them in Phoenix 2 years ago. Flawless!
I wonder if Twitter will step in and declare only one band to be correct while deleting the tweets in favor of the other bad as “untrue, not proven”.
I remember reading how John Lennon was frustrated that he couldn’t learn fingerpicking, after Donovan tried to teach him. And he said, “damn tunesmiths, “ about Donovan and/or John Sebastian.
Lindsay was an incredibly versatile musician. I believe he played all the instruments on his two solo albums after leaving Mac. Both of which were very good. One was named “Go Insane” and I can’t remember the name of the other one. He also wrote and performed “Holiday Road” which was the theme song for the movie Vacation, with Chevy Chase.
Do a search on YouTube for Glen Campbell playing The William Tell Overture on a 12 string in front of a full orchestra. It’s mind blowing.
