Viewers were left hooked by dark real-life BBC drama The Serpent, but it seems the twisting storyline wasn't the only thing that grabbed the attention of fans.

The eight-part drama, which earlier this week became iPlayer's most watched show, has sparked a huge interest in 1970's style clothing - with some items gaining an 158 per cent increase in searches on eBay UK.

The show tells the story of serial killer Charles Sobhraj who drugged and killed at least a dozen people on the Hippie Trail in Asia in the 1970s, with the help of his besotted lover and accomplice Marie-Andrée Leclerc.

Hip hugger elephant ear bell bottoms, pirate shirts with balloony sleeves and long eight button cuffs, hairy vests, platform shoes!

What’s not to like?

LOL

Around here a scarf is an acceptable substitute for a mask.

“Good lord, the horrible fashions from my youth.”

Hah! I had to wear crinoline petticoats and skirts with a big poodle on it. Our favor color go-togethers were fuschia and chartreuse satin windbreakers...boys wore gray slacks with a pink shirt and white bucks. To top off that high fashion, we bleached a strip through our hair.

Too bad I threw out all those Hash Jeans and cannot find mother’s old Joanne Fabric’s clothing patterns....would be a gold mine.

Looking at my kindergarten class photo I see a few thousand dollars worth if retro gear. Ms Klimdworth still dressed like it was the late 50s with the Cat Eye glasses.

At least there was some style, even though not the greatest. Now, people just wear their pajamas in public.

A few years ago, my daughter was enamored with the 60’s Mad Men style of clothing that had became a raging fad at that time.

Everything was completely sold out - and good thing, the fad lasted a few weeks and was over.

Same will happen here, especially with this style of clothing b/c it was hideous and only looked good on 6’ tall Twiggy-type models and hideous on the rest of us.

On the bright side, those were all clothes and eventually went into the closet or Goodwill. It’s better than tattoo sleeves and carnival sideshow tattooing and piercing. This generation will be wearing their bell bottoms for a long time.

I like how the first person in the comments writes that the 70s was the best decade for fashion. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? No it wasnt.

Wish being 70s thin would come back in style. Tired of looking at fat people.
