MELBOURNE, Australia — Serena Williams walked off the court after her latest so-close-yet-so-far bid for a 24th Grand Slam title ended with a loss to Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open(Semifinals)......
Once again, Williams played well enough to get to the closing days of a major tournament. And once again, she couldn’t quite get the job done in order to add one more Grand Slam trophy to her collection of 23 and equal Margaret Court for the most in tennis history.

Well, I do respect the Williams sisters more than all the Freepers who dropped over that Russian TNuc Anna K a few years back.
I remember that. They even talked about boycotting the tournament. But I notice the court is still named after Margaret Court, and no one has boycotted the tournament.
And Serena isn’t going to beat Margaret’s record either.
Wow! That means one full axe handle here in Arkansas.
Actually it’s Margaret Court Arena. So I stand corrected. Serena lost last night on Rod Laver Court.
Thirty-nine is ancient for singles tennis, man or woman. Very few play to that age - Laver and Rosewall and Rosie Casal from the old days, Federer now.
“...she simply overpowers a lot of her opponents and they can’t do that.”
Every couple of years a new someone comes on the surface that does it a little better than the original did. Happens in all sports. Here’s a few:
Golf - Woods
Skiing - Vonn
Hockey - Gretzky
Tennis - Navratilova
Baseball HR hitting - Aaron
Football running back - Brown
Soccer - Pele
The above were all great at what they did and were considered by most the best in their game. But youth, training tactics, and let’s face it, drug intervention, equipment innovations, sport tactics, and just someone coming up that does it better than “the old dog” are coming out of the woodwork all the time.
Chrissy got out and went to the booth as did both McEnroes. It may be time for Williams to consider working the empire she created outside the lines and set up that nest egg for full retirement. Athletes make too much money to compete as long as they do. They just let their ego over run their physical capacity and aging that causes more pain than when they were young.
And any one of the pros on a given day could do it a little better. Jack Nicklaus is a perfect example. During his career, in majors as that is what he was most successful in, Nicklaus finished second in 19 majors and had 48 top-three finishes at Slams. There was always someone out there that just play, or got lucky, a little bit better than Jack that many times. You find it in many careers, especially as they age. Time marches on.

I used to love to watch Graf play. She had the legs of a racehorse and the stamina to match.
What a goof!
Yes, the lesbian contingent of the women's game is going after Court with a vengeance. It's shameful.
Because my opponent is better!
It’s a culture thing for black gals to be theatrical.

Williams may catch a break and have a draw open up for her, i.e. the top seeds get knocked off and she gets the tournament win.

Despise may be too strong, but yeah. To hell with her!
With Serena, it’s more about the media adulation that is so offensive than anything she has said or done. Her prima donna attitude is hardly unique in tennis, and neither are her tantrums and selfishness. In my mind, her worst political moment was when she went after Tennys Sandgren for old tweets. Other than that, I don’t recall anything blatantly political that she has said outside of the usual PC b.s. I’m sure it’s out there, but it doesn’t stand out in my mind, and I’m a huge tennis, albeit mens side, fan.
So it’s like what Rush said about McNabb: with Serena what’s offensive is the leftist media slobbering over her skin color and not so much her actions herself.
As for Osaka, she was cute when she was the shy, Japanese anti-Serena. Since she became Colin Kaepernic, she’s just obnoxious.
I’m just sad my boy Thiem fell out in the round of 16. Can’t believe I’d actually root for Djokovic should he meet Medvedev, but if the Greek makes it, I’m all in for him.
Interesting conversation on the Tennis Podcast about how Graff’s ascent followed Monica Seles’ stabbing:

All I remember about Monica Seles was the SNL skit that had her grunting every time she did something.
a woman’s tears are the same as “crocodile teers”.
