Our mayor in Jacksonville decided to create a “mask enforcement unit,” even though they’re not required by the state or even the county, to harass outdoor events and restaurants. The sheriff refused to do it so he created health department brownshIrts on bicycles who would show up various places and give out tickets or threaten to arrest people. DeSantis had to speak to him firmly, invalidated the city’s power to actually enforce or collect on the tickets, and basically told the mayor that he’d gone overboard. The bicycle enforcers have quietly faded away.
