Vodka was made for so much more than mules and martinis. Vodka and any pure alcohol is good for you to a limit. You have to watch your liver which can be done by drinking every other day, or every third day. It also helps to not eat carbs while drinking. You burn the alcohol without excess sugar in your blood. Your body needs to burn off the alcohol right away. So its good at the start of a vigorous hike. It also thins your blood for a short while.

One major caution: vodka is a solvent and reduces the mucosal protection in your throat, so smoking while drinking vodka should be avoided as the solvent property allows more carcinogens from the smoke to access your tissues around vocal chords and valves/flaps in the throat.
