Search on for 16 people missing off Florida coast in 2 separate boating incidents U.S. Coast Guard crews were searching Sunday for 16 people missing in the waters off the Florida coast in two ocean rescue emergencies, including one involving a "makeshift vessel" that launched from Cuba with 10 people aboard, officials said. Both searches began on Friday and continued on Sunday. One of the rescue efforts was launched after a good Samaritan found a man described as a Jamaican national alive 23 miles off the coast of Fort Pierce, Florida, after he said he'd been on a boat with six other people that set sail from Bimini in the Bahamas, according to Coast Guard officials. The other search was also launched on Friday after 10 people who left Havana, Cuba, in a "6-foot makeshift vessel" went missing off the coast of Key West, authorities said.

That sounds exactly like what i saw some 40 years ago while I was in the Navy.
Now I remember. It was called the Mariel Boatlift in 1980.
How sad and how incredible that nothing has really changed down there.

I am a native of Miami and lived through The Mariel Boatlift. Difference is that Castro emptied out all of his prisons and sent them to Miami on the Mariel Boatlift. Crime skyrocketed. There were tents under overpasses everywhere. First reports of AIDS began to appear. A total mess and Castro was laughing his A$$ off.
Why do people risk everything to try to get to the most evil country on the planet? Besides, under new management, they could just ask Uncle Joe to come and pick them up. After all. “it is the right thing to do?” Do I need a sarcasm tag?

From the headline I expected the search to be for an often repeated scenario of a too-small boat trying to go from Florida to the Bahamas but had no food, no water, no radio, no life vests, etc.

They need to read up a bit on what’s going on here. In a couple of years, they’ll be clamoring to go back to Cuba, since there is food there at least.
They risk EVERYTHING to get to America, but soon we will to floating TO CUBA!
Nope not to nit pick but you will be “floating” to New York if your not relying on power or a good sail.
I used to be amazed looking out the AC door and seeing those people all crammed together on pallets tied to inner tubes.
It certainly is a testimony on just how F’d up Socialism/Communism is.
I wish everyone could see the condition these people are in after weeks out there but know its worth it to risk their life to give it a try.
