Old video of Maravich explaining his passing for Auerbach.
He was an incredible talent, taken from us way too young. He found Christ and, like Secretariat, had too big a heart. RIP Pistol.
Brings lots of happy memories...I went to see him play many times in the old cow barn...the old LSU Agricultural Center.
Not in the same league as Maravich, but I was a good passer in high school where often a pass would bounce off the chest of a teammate, who wasn’t expecting the pass.
Jealous. Carville (of all people) was there back then. He (and many others) talk about the Freshman game selling out (when Pete wasn’t eligible), and then the fans leaving before the varsity game started.
He scored more points than we can count in only 3 seasons w/out a 3 point line. I think Dale Brown charted his shots and determined he would have averaged 57 points/game for 3 seasons w/ a 3 point line.
He was an other world type talent for sure.
I loved watching Pete when I was a student at Tulane in the 60’s
I’ve got and old SPORT magazine from my collection right here in front of me now. It is dated March 1970, (Jerry West on the cover), that had a fantastic story on Pete. It was titled: ‘Pete Maravich and is million dollar show’. Other stories that issue: ‘Why I’m challenging baseball’ by Curt Flood....’What it’s like to play for Ted Williams’ By Frank Howard....’The Knicks, a special look at a team headed for the top’....and ‘The courage and splendor of Jerry West’. What an era! Maravich, Rick Mount, Calvin Murphy and Charlie Scott, 4 of the greatest Collegiate guards ever, playing during the same time!
Thanks for that info. Something I’d like to read, and I’m going to go looking for that article!
Good luck! (I wouldn’t know the first place to look for a 50 year old article in a long defunct sports magazine.)
Haven’t found a reprint yet, but haven’t looked that hard. Did see issues for sale on ebay for $8 or $9. Don’t know if I want to read it that bad!
FYI. Just found a few good videos on Pete on youtube. ‘Pistol Pete, the life and times of Pete Maravich’ was the best imho. 68 minutes long with lot’s of video from his pro days AND college years!
Also, I found the Maravich SPORT mag on ebay. Search: SPORT magazine. Scroll down and it is about 3/4 towards the bottom. $4.99 price. Jerry West on the cover.
