5 dead in 'mass casualty incident' on icy Texas freeway
NBC news ^ | 2/11/2021 | Tim Fitzsimons and Jay Varela and Nicole Duarte

A pileup involving 100 vehicles has killed at least five people, injured dozens more and brought traffic on a slippery Texas interstate to a halt, officials said Thursday. Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl said authorities were going to each vehicle to assess medical needs after the "mass casualty incident" involving tractor-trailers and other vehicles on Interstate 35. The freeway will be closed all day "to remove vehicles one by one," he said. Thirty-six people have been taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, according to the spokesman. Authorities had to use the Jaws of Life to pry open vehicles and free those trapped inside them. A video posted to social media shows a tractor-trailer sliding at a high speed into traffic. The crash led to others and sent some vehicles into the air. The pileup occurred as freezing rain and sleet overnight caused dangerous driving conditions during the height of the morning commute. Fort Worth is under a winter weather advisory through midday local time, according to the National Weather Service. "We have still a very active scene," Fort Worth police Officer Daniel Segura said to NBC News.

If you watch the videos a FED EX truck Slams the pile up and goes over the top of several vehicles. They were smashed flat, prob where the fatalities are.

I just spoke with my son who lives near that accident site. He says the roads are slippery and Texas doesn’t salt or sand, and the people don’t know how to drive on ice. The highways are speed limit 75 and people drive like demons, anyway. Very bad!

Of course we pray for the dead and injured. Simply looking at it from the lefties view point.

I’m so thankful that I moved to the South from Maryland.

As a senior, I no longer drive at night or in the rain and hope to keep my license for a few more years!!!!

I can understand local drivers, but it seems like a tractor trailer drivers should be trained how to drive on ice.

On the other hand, could the tractor trailer drivers be from Mexico?

One of the very few good things about living in this dreadful state called New York is when winter comes, the roads are treated properly most of the time and people know to slow down. Most of us have 4x4 suv’s or trucks. Stories like this down south where they don’t get it that often are just awful to see.

The videos that people had sent in that were shown on the local news were unbelievable. Showed the pile up as it was happening.

FedEx drivers too fast. Not a good escape plan. Cowboys with a time crunch. Not surprised

The accident is is on I-35W just NE of Ft. Worth. Many lanes and 75 mph speed limit, very aggressive drivers. It makes my hair stand up driving through there in good weather.

The worst problems in the Metroplex are the Yankees that know how to drive on snow.

This isn’t snow, it’s ice. And the proper response is to sit at home for a couple of days until it melts.

Roads are actually pretty good north of Dallas. The bridges can be iffy, but as long as you don’t brake or hit the gas, you’re probably OK.

I think the speed limit on that portion of the managed lanes is 75. That will get you run over most days.

The road is elevated and we have been getting sleet and freezing rain for some hours. Quick ice formation.

Prayers up for those involved.
