Tonnes of Cornish cheese at risk of being thrown away

Up to two tonnes of cheese is at risk of being thrown away by a company struggling to sell off its stock during lockdown.

Cornish Blue cheese takes about 10 weeks to mature and then has to be sold within six weeks.

It is made by the Cornish Cheese Company which sells 80% of its product to the hospitality sector which has been closed since early January.

The company said the cheese would go off within two to three weeks.

Ben Stansfield said: "We were making this cheese back in October and September, and we didn't expect a lockdown in January, February, March and maybe even longer.

"And because of hospitality having to close we lost our wholesale business overnight. We have got a big fridge full - about two tonnes.

"Normally we could sell this easily with all the wholesalers open, but it is all going to go off within two to three weeks.

"We are trying our best to not have to throw any away but we won't be able to sell it after that and you can't freeze two tonnes of cheese."

I know we all make fun of Brit food but this stuff is great, Its superior to French Roquefort.

And lets face it, Brits know how to make beer.

I could go for 1/2 pound burger, medium rare topped with sliced jalapenos, a splash of buffalo wing sauce and some crumble bleu cheese...

The bun needs to be slightly stained with blood to enhance the flavor.

“it is all going to go off within two to three weeks”

I hate to say it, but the poor fellow is probably going to have to sell it off at a huge loss as pig feed.

Even then, pig farmers are likely in the same pickle as he is. More pigs than they can sell.

He may not even be able to sell all of it off as feed.

These political leaders have lost their minds. Who do they think they are saving?

The only ones they care about saving are themselves.

Something like this puts it all in to perspective.
Here we are upset that the dim state stole the the Presidential election while these folks are losing tons of cheese.
I am sure there is any connection.

Cornish Blue cheese takes about 10 weeks to mature and then has to be sold within six weeks.

Is that six week window a rule, a guideline or a policy? Does the cheese deteriorate to the point where it must have a use-by date? I've had various cheeses opened but wrapped and refrigerated for many months; if there was excess mold I'd just trim it off before using. We haven't died yet.

I always laugh, they sell parmesan wedges for like $14 a wedge.
I wait till they mark it down to $2.99 for fast sale cuz they think it is about to expire.

It aint bad, it’s been aging in a cave for 2 years! but USDA has rules.

“..but it is all going to go off within two to three weeks..”

There was an old Guidan cartoon (think Gary Larson) about the guy that goes into the Minneapolis Public Works department. He has milk jugs, butter, cheese wrapped around his body.

“If my street doesn’t get plowed by midnight tomorrow - well, note the expiration date of these dairy products!!”

Still, going forward, I think that we will see surviving businesses will no longer just serve commercial establishments, but will make sure that they can sell retail if needed.

In my local markets, I’ve seen them selling five pound bags of pasta and large bags of chicken strips, obviously originally intended for restaurants.
