Article 1 Section 3 states that the Chief Justice shall preside -- but he isn't. So this isn't a real impeachment trial.
Article 1 Section 3 also contains a crucial AND:
Judgement in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States
It's a "logic" thing. The "and" is not casual. First you remove, AND then you disqualify. If you cannot do they first thing, then you cannot do the second thing. They cannot remove THEREFORE they cannot disqualify.
This is a Bill of Attainder and nothing less. The Legislature is voting to punish someone who displeases them. That's also unconstitutional.
I like your word “travesty” and the way you broke it down in just a few sentences. Your observation as regards logic is the crux of the matter because so few in DC are able to operate logically with guidance from common sense.
If we as a nation cannot agree on the meaning of the word “impeachment” then what other words will we find new meanings for?
Theft?
Lying?
Murder?
