Cops made 545,602 arrests for marijuana-related violations in 2019

NORML:

According to the most recent national data, police made 545,602 arrests for marijuana-related violations in 2019.

That is 1,494 people a day.

That is 62 people an hour.

That is more than a person minute.

This is not justice. This is not freedom. This should not be normal.

Zuri Davis:

Lives are being ruined forever over a plant that is safer to consume than legal alcohol. A criminal record is a life sentence. 545,602 people will now struggle to find jobs, a place to live, and a business loan. They can’t vote or buy a gun for self-defense.

I was all for legalizing pot in Colorado to see the results, to test the various theories. The results have been been devastating.

Frankly, I think you're seeing what you want to see; if you want to do more than preach to the choir (maybe you don't), you'll want to back up your claims with some links.

Our teen-aged runaway problem has 100 folded, easily.

I have to call Bravo Sierra on that "100 fold".

Teens are leaving home in other States to come here so they can smoke pot.

I'd expect that's a rerouting rather than an increase - if you're a disaffected teen running away, might as well run where you think it's easier to get pot.

That is not a fair or legit comparison. It’s fine if you want to find excuse for pot, but there is no excuse for pot. I know I’m a minority here in this, but it should remain illegal it should return to be totally illegal everywhere.

No, the conservative response is to prevent reasonable harm.

We arrest drunken drivers BEFORE they kill someone. Etc.

The state has a legitimate interest in a sane population.

“So we should enact laws banning the inebriating drug alcohol as well - right?”

Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This is one death every 50 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.

https://www.cdc.gov/transportationsafety/impaired_driving/impaired-drv_factsheet.html

Please re-read the article. They are not banning marijuana, or alcohol. They are enforcing the laws in place to protect other citizens from the harmful aftermath of people who do not police themselves and stay sober when doing things that get others harmed or killed, like driving.

They have failed all the way along in trying to ban drugs of any type as the people just ignore the laws and the safety of others. If it was up to me, I’d determine any drug that changes the ability to function in a safe manner to a controlled substance and only give it to those that medically need it. Giving in to it was why they couldn’t ban alcohol even with a Constitutional amendment (18th) which they chose to repeal (21st) because people just broke the law for recreation. And there have been over 10,000 people a year killed by an impairment result in the 2000’s.

Do I think banning or better controlling a product for recreation that has killed that many people should be accomplished? You be the judge, but try to guess how a parent will react when they are told their kid was killed by a drunk driver, or a grass fed one. They were sold as no different to get them legalized. They should offer the same penalties for their improper and, in too many cases, illegal use. And the only reason an impaired person would get into a car to drive is stupidity. They know they ingested, they know the drug is designed to do this and is used specifically for that purpose, and they know they are a danger as soon as the car moves. So you want to leave the decision up to people that too many have already proven they won’t act humanly? The inmates running the asylum.

the risk and damage to society and individuals by their actions is a matter for all of us to contend with.

Are those risks and damages qualitatively different from those related to alcohol use? Should that drug also be banned?

That is not a fair or legit comparison.

Provide evidence for your claim; each is a mind-altering potentially addictive substance.

I would also recommend this as a supplement: “Ashwagandha Extract” (in liquid form) google it or amazon.

It’s an ancient herb tastes horrible but I take a few drops and sleep much better and also feel other benefits!

“ There is no upside to pot use.”

You ever use pot? If not you’re not fully qualified to judge, and in no way are any antiPot Freepers qualified to judge for me what I ingest.

Weed helps reduce the pain from my cancer, helps me move my bowels, gives me a need pick up when I’m feeling down, helps me focus and since I don’t Ike alcohol (but I respect your right to drink), I get high instead ‘cause I like it. I’ve tried prescription narcotics to help me out but a couple of hits of descent weed does EXACTLY the same thing without the addictive side effects and on the narcotics I have disturbing dreams and some hallucinations, none of that happens with pot.

Weed is not for everyone, no one should drive, operate machinery etc while high, but for those that have access to it, it MIGHT BE a real game changer.

Liberty loving republicans have really missed the boat on the legalization issue, fighting legalization is just dumb on several levels. IMHO

We should ban inebriation. Public drunkenness, etc is usually banned as it is.

If someone just has a puff or two with dinner and doesn’t get high, yeah right, no one uses pot that way.

Conservative, not libertarian. You don’t have the right to make yourself crazy.

to keep people with little of no intelligence from harming others, they have to enforce those laws

So we should enact laws banning the inebriating drug alcohol as well - right?

Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. [...] They are not banning marijuana, or alcohol.

Your previous subject was "making the stuff legal", not DUI laws. I support DUI laws 110% percent - and in fact support stiffening the penalties actually applied; too many drunks get repeated slaps on the wrist before killing someone.

They have failed all the way along in trying to ban drugs of any type [...] they couldn’t ban alcohol even with a Constitutional amendment (18th) which they chose to repeal (21st) because people just broke the law for recreation.

Agreed.

Do I think banning or better controlling a product for recreation that has killed that many people should be accomplished?

I'd love to see it accomplished, but blanket bans are a proven failure - and aggravate other grave problems, primarily the enrichment of violent criminals, with all the ills that entails.

So what level of alcohol use makes one crazy, and how do we effectively ban that while keeping alcohol legal?

Bravo Sierra. The VAST majority of these violators (it is, after all, illegal most places) will be offered, and successfully complete, deferred adjudication or deferred disposition and have the charge dismissed. It doesn’t affect those people at all in the way this person asserts above.

Okay, then how much are we taxpayers forking out for all this police and court time if no one is actually being punished? Is this just a make-work program for the justice system?

Then get the laws changed, through the proper channels. But don't stick ME with the bill for those who toke themselves into befuddled unemployability, like they did with alcoholics by calling it a disease instead of a behavior.

It does have medicinal benefits and relieve pain for MS sufferers for example. Why should they be forced into a black market?

Wow, so I have no standing to judge pot used because I haven’t used it. That means I have no standing to oppose murder, since I’ve never committed it. I cannot think of a more ignorant suggestion than yours. I can see, we can all see, many of us of experience the problems associated with pot use. Only someone uncaring, his only concern is they’re selfish desires would ignore the impact of pot use.

There is nothing like it that is legal. For some people weed is a wonder plant and not everyone who uses it is a recreational stoner/student/criminal.

These stereotypes need to go.

In fact, there are Freepers who are using it (they do so at considerable risk) and they’re trying to give you the facts...

For most? Large amounts of “recreational” Marijuana are not the same as small amounts of medical Marijuana.
