A Japanese submarine crashed into a Chinese tanker while it was surfacing after the crew failed to spot the giant ship through their periscope, officials have said.

The crew of the Japanese navy's 275-foot vessel then had to report the incident by mobile phone because the submarine's radio was destroyed in the crash.

Three of the crew members of the 'Soryu' suffered minor injuries, while the submarine suffered damage to its mast, Japanese defence officials said on Monday.

What is a Japanese word for face palm embarrassment? the Soryu is Japan's state of the art diesel-electric and AIP submarine. How with all those sensors could it not notice a tanker in the area?

A few years ago there were a couple of US destroyer collisions with other ships in that area. The bridge crew was relying on the radar that was set incorrectly.

Had they picked up their heads, and looked out the window with the Mark 1 eyeball they would have seen what they were running into.

Maybe the Hiryu, Kaga and Akagi were also in the area and nearly collided with the ship as well.
