OC Students Stage Virtual Strike In Support Of Teachers Who Do Not Feel Safe Returning To Campus
CBS NEWS LOS ANGELES ^ | February 3, 2021 | Staff

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA) — It was back to the classroom this week for the 120 teachers in the Huntington Beach Union High School District who have been teaching from home since the school year began.

The option of remote teaching is no longer being offered by the district, which has prompted a group of students to organize a virtual strike in support of their teachers who have been forced to use their sick time or take a leave of absence if they do not feel safe returning to campus.

“The teachers who felt OK to be there, a majority of them do not have severe health issues, and I think it almost proves that these teachers aren’t staying home to be lazy,” Samantha Shaw, an organizer of the student strike, said. “They genuinely have health issues or their family members have health issues so we’re advocating for this minority of teachers to be able to teach at home until it is safe.”

According to the teachers union, there were 80 teachers from a variety of high schools who said they were not comfortable returning for health reasons and would not return until after they have been vaccinated — using up precious sick days or going out on leave.

“We would like them to be able to return to their remote assignments so that they can continue to teach from home,” Shawne Hume, HBUHS District Educators Association president, said. “The students can learn from campus with an adult in the classroom supervising them while their teacher teaches them.”

The student organizers started an online petition stating that the district’s decision “jeopardizes the education of many HBUHSD students,” especially those enrolled in advanced courses, but the students said nothing has convinced the district to change course.

“We’ve had numerous students voice their strong opinions in support of the teachers, and the district still has not listened,” Shaw said.

The students said they planned to try again at next week’s school board meeting.

The district did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

These students are very misguided...Naive also...

Teachers like staying home...I am sure many of them would be OK with coming back to school in 2022...Next year...

Ms. Shaw...I guess you have no problem with distance learning...But, many of your classmates need to go to back to school and get help in-person...

The school board should ignore these "protestors"...

By the way, Huntington Beach district is a good district...In Orange County, California...

When all is said and done, in some minority/urban school districts, there will be quite a few kids who will not have attended any school or had any learning for 2 years, or more.

What will their prospects be, and what will their neighborhoods be like?

If they don’t feel safe teaching, go get a job in the Solar Panel Industry as Horseface Kerry suggests.

[[Teachers like staying home...]]

They wouldn’t if their paychecks were cut off for failure to full-fill their contracts

I would agree with you...the bulk of kids in this 2020/2021 episode are probably a full year behind, and there’s marginally hope for 2022’s educational year.

Ask yourself...just how prepared will graduates be in 2022 for even junior college....let alone a full-up four year period at a university? I’d predict that more than a quarter of kids stepping up in 2022 for college will be there for twelve months and flunk out because of their non-existing skills.

Hey, never go to school again. Stop paying the teachers. Why pay for teaching that is never done? Why should anyone care?
They don’t.

Wrong on all accounts.

I teach at an arts/media in the Bay Area. Administration wanted us back teaching face-to-face (primarily the reasoning was accreditation).

All the students and probably 98% of the faculty said no way in hell will we teach or or students learn on campus for hours on end with a effing face mask, face shield and gloves.

We won this round.

Glad you refrained from calling it “Conservative Orange County”; it’s not been anywhere close four thirty years or so, and the leftward drift continues.

Disappointing, but not surprising.

How are you accomplishing anything these days? How do you pull off all (any?) of the hands-on stuff remotely?

They need to stop paying teachers if they are not teaching in the classroom. Period.

You would be amazed how many of them will show up to work within a week.

Discord, zoom, and a decent LMS.

Hands-on? That’s easy. Same way as in the classroom. Instead of screen sharing through a video cable, screen sharing through discord. Instead if code-sharing and collaboration through GitHub, well code-sharing and collaboration through GitHub.

And no effing masks, face shields and gloves. The first day I will be told to return to the classroom wearing that junk, will be my last. Period.

Let’s try an experiment, or do understand 100% of what is said through a mask and face shield with perfect clarity and does your listener understood 100% what you are saying?

You try doing a job like teaching wearing a face mask, face shield and gloves. Let’s see the percentage of content you can teach effectively and be understood wearing that garbage.

I will never return to the classroom wearing that garbage. Period.

Yeah, I guess I was wondering more about things like Videography, Audio Production — topics that need to have students in contact with actual equipment. Not like the school can say, “Hey, uh, since COVID, you’ll need your own $15,000 in-home A/V Studio to complete your coursework. Here’s an equipment list and contact information for our preferred suppliers.”

Jeff Spicoli: [Desmond re-enters; Spicoli follows with bagel stuffed into crotch; with open shirt, barefoot, holding Vans] Wait a minute, there's no birthday party for me here! Hello, Mr. Hand.

Mr. Hand: What's the reason for your truancy?

Jeff Spicoli: Just couldn't make it on time.

Mr. Hand: You couldn't, or you wouldn't?

Jeff Spicoli: See, there was a full crowd at the food lines.

Mr. Hand: Food will be eaten on YOUR time. Why are you continuously late for this class, Mr. Spicoli? Why do you shamelessly waste my time like this?

Jeff Spicoli: [long pause, but then with complete truth in his answer] I don't know.

Mr. Hand: [Mr. Hand goes to blackboard and writes the words 'I Don't Know', then underlines them] [reciting]

Mr. Hand: I like that. 'I Don't Know.' That's nice. [imitating]

Mr. Hand: 'Mr. Hand, will I pass this class?' Gee, Mr. Spicoli, I don't know! You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to leave your words right up here for all my classes to enjoy, giving you full credit of course, Mr. Spicoli.

Jeff Spicoli: All right!

No worries Gubermint Taxpayers will give them handouts and Section 8 housing in their newly formed Ghettos for their life
