After renaming debacle, San Francisco Unified School District says acronyms are a sign of 'white supremacy culture'

The San Francisco Unified School District's recent vote to rename schools over the reckoning of historical figures and their flawed legacies has been widely seen as an incompetent, embarrassing mess.

The near-unanimous vote on Monday to rename 44 schools by the San Francisco Board of Education came after years of debate. The canceled names include campuses named after former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

And as if spending valuable time (and a lot of money) renaming a third of the schools in the district when every student is still stuck at home wasn't enough, some in the district have now taken the confounding stance that acronyms are a symptom of "white supremacy culture" and are working to remove them from buildings.

The district's arts department has decided to change its name, "VAPA" (visual and performing arts) to "SFUSD Arts Department" because they say "acronyms are a symptom of white supremacy culture," reports ABC7.

I am going to cry a river to the Southern Poverty Law Center that they are engaging in hate speech for calling white people “white supremacists.” What if I called Oprah Winfrey a black female supremacist? Is anyone who is good at what they do to be smeared with hate speech?

My high school was once named for Georgia’s most famous poet, Sidney Lanier. Other high schools in town were named for local luminaries. After integration finally arrived, they changed the school names to Central, Southwest and Northeast.

Reminds me of a fake HOA newsletter somebody put in EVERY owner's mailbox in our neighborhood. Apparently, the writer was upset with the HOA. It was hilariously funny and generally done in good taste. As far as I know, the writer remains anonymous to this day. The one item that has stuck in my mind...
