NEW YORK (Reuters) -The family of Tony Bennett has revealed that the legendary singer has been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, breaking their silence on his condition four years after he was diagnosed with the progressive, memory-destroying disease.
His wife Susan told AARP Magazine in an interview published on Monday that the 94-year-old singer, whose first hit “Because of You” was released in 1951, had been losing his ability to make decisions. In an effort to keep working, Bennett had been hiding his diagnosis, she said.
Bennett remains upbeat but his condition is increasingly deteriorating, his wife said.
“He would ask me, ‘What is Alzheimer’s?’ I would explain, but he wouldn’t get it,” his wife told AARP Magazine.
Gayatri Devi, a neurologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and author of “The Spectrum of Hope” about Alzheimer’s, diagnosed Bennett in 2016.
Devi has strongly encouraged Bennett’s family to keep him singing and performing for as long as he can enjoy it.
“It kept him on his toes and also stimulated his brain in a significant way,” Devi is quoted as telling AARP Magazine.
The disease, the most common form of age-related dementia, causes a decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
It leaves its victims dependent on caregivers, although Bennett so far has been spared the disorientation that can sometimes prompt patients to wander from home or experience terror, rage or depression, AARP Magazine said.

Will he forget he’s a leftist?
He is still performing at 94. Incredible. Hope he continues performing as long as he is able.
His absolute and undying love of the Kenyan illegal alien turned me off a long time ago. I can’t listen to a single thing this left sings anymore.

Amazingly talended singer but I often think he left too much of his heart in San Francisco.
Tony and Betty White both surprised me with their leftist lunacy.
Saw him perform at Mohegan Sun Arena. Piano, drums, bass, and voice. What an amazing performer, his voice could project across the arena without the microphone. A true class act. A legend right in front of you, showing how it’s done.
Tony Bennett: Wonderful Artist, Political Lunatic

86 year-old Tony Bennett is in the news again, this time for uttering yet-another bit of left-wing lunacy. Yesterday, in a press conference loaded with anti-Second Amendment celebrities wearing their prescription-less “smart” glasses, Bennett claimed that gun ownership would turn America into Nazi Germany. Even though, you know, one of Hitler’s early chess moves towards the “Final Solution” was to confiscate guns from Jews.
BYE Tony. I am 59 and never listened to any of your music.
Fact is you could have died 40 years ago and I wouldn’t have noticed. JUST glad the 2A will outlive you.
rule of thumb....artistes are leftists until strongly proven otherwise
Glenn Campbell had alzheimers too. He was able to continue performing for quite a while after the diagnosis.
At a certain point, he was simply unable to do it anymore.
Tony may have a few more years to perform under the right conditions.
Maybe, but he left another substantial part in Capital City.

Billie Ellish missed her chance. She of the bright green hair. Billie looks a frumpy mess, but she has a great natural voice for the Blues.
That might be a good thing considering what the leftists have done to the place.
Get him a teleprompter and play the music like they do for Biden.
A rabid America hater.
I remember that. Glenn did a gig here in Indiana in 2012 and had a lot of problems getting through the program.
Never liked his singing, never liked his politics, but I would never wish this on him.
Hopefully, he got the shot so he doesn’t die of Covid.
