6 months, there was a gas shortage on the east coast. Gas sold only 7am to 7pm. Set your thermostat 65 day and 45 night. Yes 45!!
Evidently, no one paid attention to reality. 90% of all gas and heating oil was transported by barge from the gulf coast to New England. Those 50 tankers were 20% of the supply. They had to quickly build an 1800 mile pipeline to help. Pipeline was called a war defense emergency measure.

He made a big deal of creating the Dept. of Energy as a cabinet level position. Of course the DOE does not oversee energy production or use. Never has or will.
Anyone remember why there was a gas shortage? Because the federal government decided that THEY should decide how to distribute the gas, not the oil companies who had been doing if for decades. And as usual, they screwed it up.

I just replaced my entire 1984 vintage heating and cooling system after nursing it along for the last 5 years. The AC went out first and finally the heater went completely out a year ago this month. I used the Costco program and put in the state of the art most efficient system that Lennox makes. They came out and cleaned and sealed all of my duct work, and installed that super duper air purifier system for $24,000.
My duct work leaked so bad that the estimated size of the hole would be 300 square inches. when they were done is was just less than 9 square inches.
Got my 15% Costco discount and 2% Costco Executive rewards.
My average annual power bill was close to $7,500 year for a 2,400sf home. The system is saving me $400- $500 month in the summer and up to twice that in the winter and now my average power bill is between $185 and $215 month now.
I think sleeping in 55 degree bedroom is FANTASTIC! I love it. Best idea old Jimmah ever had.
I forgot to mention that we set the heat at 65 over night and at 68 when were home. Summer AC temp is now 72.
Before that to even cool the house was 68 and to heat the house was 72.
If I put it on 70 it will get way to warm in the winter and too cold in the summer.
My next project will be to replace the windows and insulate the floor.

I was in North Carolina that year and visited an old lady neighbor. That poor woman came from a generation that truly believed the President was looking out for her. Her house was like an icebox and she was dressed for outside in the snow...in her living room. Carter should burn in hell for the suffering he caused those defenseless old people.
I remember those days well. The oil prices shot way up!
I also remember talking to several people who worked in the oil and gas fields on how the Carter Administration refused to allow the oil companies to charge the new higher rate for their oil even though the prices were up.
The Carter Admin said only NEW drilled wells could charge the higher price.
So the oil companies shut down their old wells, and drilled NEW WELLS right next to the old wells to get the newer higher price.
I got my drivers lic in ‘74, never once during those days did I EVER wait in line for gas.
