Pizza Hut’s new rectangular, deep-dish pie has catapulted “Detroit-style” pizza into the national spotlight.
The latest iteration of the Italian staple from the Kansas-based chain borrows from a recipe that originated at Buddy’s Rendezvous — now Buddy’s Pizza chain — in Detroit, just after World War II.
The pies are baked in a rectangular or round pan and covered in Wisconsin cheese. Red sauce and toppings are added last.
For many Americans, the Pizza Hut rollout was their first introduction to the Motor City’s twist on the food more commonly associated with New York and Chicago.

Detroit pizza, where they rob you at delivery.
That makes it extra delicious.
Bless you! Has always been one of my favorites.
Regards,
I like it more each time I watched.
Not to mention tge Zither music.
Mineo’s, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh—great mozzarella
Bertucci’s—a bit pricey but not bad
Pizzeria Uno—fairly good pan pizza. In the
90s I visited the original Chicago location
Some neighborhood one-location places
do half decent pizza.
Currently in the Boston area some places are advertising Detroit style pizza.
Apparently a cult item on Boston’s South Shore is taverns that serve “bar pizza”.
One short lived but interesting variant about 30 years ago in the Boston area was Ruggles with “English style pizza”. Cheddar was used and tea was available. It had 4 locations including Harvard Sq Cambridge and Downtown Crossing Boston, then it went out of business.
The Blaze chain, partly owned by Lebron James. has people requesting pizza or salad to order—choose various ingredients when you go through the cafeteria style line. Fast and cheaply priced, and when I went it seemed popular with college students.
I am not a pizza fan. Never have been. But....we have a friend that owns a pizza chain that makes the kind of pizzas you’re talking about. The crust is delicious and there is no shortage of toppings. They’re piled high. The pizzas them selves are kind of expensive but worth the price. They are a meal. I actually get hungry for Tony’s Pizza about once a month....and I don’t care for pizza.
Hey, it’s Duckman!
Yes!
Cool.
