A section of Highway 1 in Big Sur has disappeared.
One lane of the highway was struck by debris flow and washed away, Caltrans reported. The road continues to erode as debris and water continues to flow down off the Big Sur mountains.
According to Big Sur Fire, the section of highway is located at Rat Creek, south of Esalen and north of Big Creek.
Caltrans crews will be out at the damaged section of road Friday morning to fully assess the damage.

Drove on that exact spot in October 2007. It’s almost as scary at night as it is in that picture!

I remember that very well.

That’s lot of understeer in that beautiful car, if you get going too fast. Going off the cliff reminds me of “Thelma & Louise”...

Serious understeer for a car that lightweight. I would have opted for a lighter 260cui with a supercharger of IHI turbo.

My wife and I did our honeymoon driving from Oklahoma to Monterrey, CA by way of route 66 to LA then Hwy 1 up the coast.
In 1983, in a 1980 Mustang.
Living the dream, best honeymoon ever.

Not mine, with blueprinted engine of 320hp. on a road course. Maybe at a dragstrip.

Back in the 60’s everyone thought California was going to drop off into the ocean. Well, California did go off the deep end.

Options for the 400 model were: Ford 289, rear end 2:1 or 4:1, your choice of color - maroon with gold flake. No seat belts or roll bars.
In those days the chassis was imported from TVR in the UK by a Long Island Ford dealer who in stalled the engines.

There was no Porsche that could have beat a model 400 and never a 200. I know because at the time I worked a a foreign car shop and we ran many a test. I don’t remember the 0 to 60 time, but was well under 10 sec. 289 Shelby Cobras were tad slower.

Back in the 60’s everyone thought California was going to drop off into the ocean. Including my high school geography teacher. He moved to Arizona.
