WASHINGTON, Monday, Jan. 28.
The sailing of the Brooklyn continues the topic of excited discussion in official circles here, and a collision is certainly anticipated at Pensacola, should that be her destination, as is generally believed.
Mr. CRITTENDEN had a long interview, to-day, with Mr. TYLER, and expressed his regret at the act of the Administration in sending troops southward at this particular juncture.
Mr. TYLER will be detained till to-morrow, awaiting disptaches from Judge ROBINSON, the Commissioner of Virginia to the seceding States. Judge R. is expected to reach Pensacola to-night.
MR. DOUGLAS' COMPROMISE.
Senator DOUGLAS proposes to introduce an amendment of the Constitution simply removing from Congress all power over the subject of Slavery, and forever prohibiting the Slave-trade. This, he thinks, may possibly satisfy all the States earnestly desirous of preserving the Union.
The Boards of Trade of Chicago and Milwaukee' numbering over a hundred, called on Senator TRUMBULL this afternoon. The appearance of the crowd not being understood, a report soon spread over the city that "Uncle ABE" had arrived. The gentlemen leave to morrow.
The Navy Department, to-day, issued a large number of commissions and warrants to passed midshipmen and engineers in the Navy.
THE DUTY ON SUGAR.
The great popularity of the proposed reduction of duties on sugar was remarkably demonstrated to-day, by the promptness with which the House instructed as inquiry into its expediency, with leave to the Committee to report, by bill.
THE HOWARD SPECIAL COMMITTEE.
Mr. HOWARD'S Committee on the President's Special Message, relative to the secession movement, will report in part immediately, with bills placing at the disposal of the Executive all the necessary force to maintain the Government and execute the laws.
