HBO Max's 'Tiger' doc - and white America - still doesn't understand Tiger Woods
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Jan. 28, 2021 | Rod Benson

I was 13 years old when I found golf. More accurately, an older white lady saw me and my brother at the putt-putt in Del Mar, California, and asked me if I played real golf.

The writer puts way too much emphasis on Woods being black in a “white” world rather than Woods being very talented in the extremely competitive world of professional golf. People didn’t/don’t like Woods because he’s black in a white world, they like Woods because he’s GOOD at playing golf. If you don’t play golf, you have virtually no idea how good PGA players are.

Professional golf tournaments are usually held over 4 days, and the winner is often decided by only 1-3 strokes. Imagine a basketball game that goes on long enough for the winning score to be in the ballpark of 280. How often would the losing team have 275-279? Not often I’d wager.

And golf is almost pure capitalism. There’s no Affirmative Action. Your pay is based on your score. (There are exceptions. Players like Woods are sometimes paid “Appearance Fees”, but I think those are in tournaments in Dubai or somewhere in order to attract big name players and thus get the tournament on the golf map.)

I don’t think this guy watched the documentary. He said they didn’t discuss the fact that Tiger broke many barriers on race & opened eyes. They talked about it several times. His race was over exposed in the docu-series.

BTW he is a black guy who wrote it. He is overly racially sensitive.

It’s also surprisingly light on the weightiest aspect of Tiger's legacy: He’s the greatest golfer to ever live

That would be Jack Nicklaus.

Tiger is half-Thai. He is more Thai than black. Vijay Singh is darker than Tiger.

This guy is still buggin’ because he’s black but (as many people might not be aware) Woods does not identify as being black. Woods made the statement way back in the 90s in GQ magazine. I heard about it, bought the magazine with the interview in it and took it to work to show one of my black coworkers who was an avid golfer. He was always bragging about woods so I waited. Next time he did I broke out the article and let him read it.....his reaction was priceless.

The fact woods does not identify as black bugs the crap out of a lot of blacks.

Tiger Woods is mixed race, Asian and African American. They never want to think about the Asian influence in his life. I guess that doesn’t matter as much to them.

Black people got mad at him for saying he was “Cablinasian” but I think we all also knew why he said that. For him to keep his job and his money, Tiger can’t afford to be just Black.

He ISN'T "just" black. Why should he deny his mother's racial heritage? Or does the author like the "one drop" rule?

I saw it. Not bad, except for all of the race baiting A holes (Bryant Gumbel, I’m looking at you). They played a clip of the intro to the Masters where a white guy pretty much kissed Tiger’s rear end and wished him well on and off the golf course and then Bryant, with a sneer, called that a public whipping.

Millionaire black dudes commenting on hundred millionaire black dudes telling everyone how bad the white dudes are holding them down.....again.

Earl conditioned Tiger to speak and act in a manner pleasing to white people.

Learning how to be charming is part of a good education for everyone

“Another liberal-white guilt guy, who wants us all to to feel his white-guilt. F him”

Exactly, and many of the things he says just do not make sense, for example, only need one club to play golf.

Why does everything have to be about race now? What happened to the normal American family. Every TV ad now feels they have to have a bi-racial family. What’s wrong with an all black, white, or yellow family? Every TV show has to have a gay couple in it and often a bi-racial couple thrown in for good measure. Why is this being shoved down my throat?

Diversity...

But of course if you want to celebrate your Caucasian-ness, you are a supremacist!

What, Blacks don't like to be treated and spoken to in a respectful way?

The world of professional golf is a true meritocracy, and it is global too. Just to qualify for one of the professional tours is a major accomplishment when one considers the number of aspiring golfers. Qualifying schools are a major grind.

And having made a tour, one still has to perform in order to stay there. There are no long-term contracts as in baseball and football, the closest to such a thing being winning a major which gives the player a five-year exemption. Otherwise, it's perform or you're out. Don't make cuts, you don't get paid. Of course the prize money is through the roof these days, and that is mainly due to one Eldrick Woods.

And a player only starts getting appearance fees after some big wins like a major or The Player’s.

Bryant Gumbel is the a-holes' a-hole.

BTW, he divorced his first (black) wife and remarried a white woman.
