THE NATIONAL CRISIS: The Anticipated Descent on Washington; THE DISUNION MOVEMENT; Editorial-Compromise-The Border States and the Union (1/28/1861)

WASHINGTON, Sunday, Jan. 27.

The rumor was rife to-day that Gen. SCOTT had received new intelligence relative to designs on the Capital, by secession invaders, which causes him much anxiety. If it is so, he keeps the secret admirably, for no facts in support of the rumor can be ascertained. Mayor BERRET scouts the idea of any danger of an attack on this city, and says he has no intelligence denoting it, which he is confident he should have if the purpose existed.

I understand from reliable authority that the President denies that the Brooklyn has gone to Charleston, but declines saying where she has gone. The inference is that she goes to Fort Pickens, and a collision is anticipated by Florida Senators. They say an attack will certainly be made by the State troops, who are now fully prepared to take the Fort. Mr. TYLER expresses regret at this movement, as, he fears it will defeat the object of his mission here. He has determined to return home to-morrow afternoon. Judge ROBINSON, who was dispatched to Southern States by Virginia to induce them to keep the peace, telegraphs that if the Brooklyn be destined for Pensacola he had as well return home.

CASSIUS M. CLAY had a rousing audience to hear him last night. He made a bold, earnest, Anti-Slavery Extension speech, which was vociferously cheered. Fifteen years ago such a speech here, would have endangered his life. The world moves.

Mr. CLEMENS, of Virginia, left to-day for home, to fight the Secessionists in the campaign for a State Convention. He has received bushels of letters from every section, indorsing his recent admirable Union speech, of which 250,000 copies have been ordered already.

All those, in retrospect, silly northern fears, and forlorn southern hopes.
