Cloris Leachman, Emmy and Oscar Winner, Dies at 94
Variety ^ | January 27, 2021 | Carmel Dagan

Oscar winner and multiple Emmy winner Cloris Leachman, best remembered as the delightfully neurotic Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and her own subsequent sitcom, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 94.

“It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time,” her longtime manager Juliet Green said. “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”

The daffy, self-absorbed Phyllis, a character she claimed was close to her own persona, brought the actress two Emmys as a featured actress in a series during the mid-’70s and made Leachman a household name.

Leachman also won a supporting actress Oscar in the early part of the decade for a far different character, an embittered small-town housewife in Peter Bogdanovich’s elegiac “The Last Picture Show”; she would later reprise the role in the film’s less successful sequel “Texasville.” Both films were based on the writings of Larry McMurtry.

Overnight success for the actress, however, came only after two decades of hard work in theater, television and some films. Leachman was in her 40s when stardom finally hit.

“Boomer?” She is 20 years older than Me! I was born in 1946. So that would make her born in 1926.

The last movie I saw her in was “I Can Only Imagine”, the story of Bart Millard of Mercy Me. She played his grandmother (Dennis Quaid played his abusive father). I was surprised but pleased to see her in such an explicitly Christian film.

Some Spillane paperback covers were porno in a manner of speaking.

Cloris could have played Barbara Stanwyck’s sister. They looked alike, both tough and direct in character. The big difference being Cloris was known for her kooky sense of humor. Barbara was usually The Boss.

Ed Asner must have fully retired. I didn’t hear a word from him during the NeverTrump Fever era. Good. Ed could have been as bad as Bobby deNiro when it came to insulting republicans.
Harry Belafonte is another angry Commie voice almost fully silent these days.

If you want to laugh your butt off, check out her performance at the roast of Bob Saggett.

She brought me a lot of enjoyment. May she rest in peace.

All paperback covers were semi-porno till 1968 when Bobby Kennedy was murdered. The glorification of violence was blamed so.....
TV shows were blamed so they dumbed down to kiddie shows.

Pulp fiction replaced their bloody sexy covers with less blood and sex covers.
Theater Movies shown on TV were butchered to remove violent scenes.
Toy guns were blamed. They disappeared from toy stores.

But theater movies got a “Pass” as they said they would Police themselves with a joke of a ratings system. G.M.R.X.

So they re-shot scenes ADDING blood, guts violence and lots of sex to get the coveted “R” or “X” rating, then filmed the trailers to appeal to pre-teens.

Now with cable TV, violence has made a comeback on TV. and pulp fiction and “adult” comic books glorify sex and violence on their covers.

Jan Clayton played the original mother in Lassie...Ellen Miller. Her son was Jeff, played by Tommy Rettig. That’s the one we used to watch as kids.
