Brief: Movim is an open-source decentralized social media platform that relies on XMPP network and can communicate with other applications using XMPP.
We’ve already highlighted some open-source alternatives to mainstream social media platforms. In addition to those options available, I have come across another open-source social media platform that focuses on privacy and decentralization.
Just like some other XMPP desktop clients, Movim is a web-based XMPP front-end to let you utilize it as a federated social media.
Since it relies on XMPP network, you can interact with other users utilizing XMPP clients such as Conversations (for Android) and Dino (for Desktop).
In case you didn’t know, XMPP is an open-standard for messaging.
So, Movim can act as your decentralized messaging app or a full-fledged social media platform giving you an all-in-one experience without relying on a centralized network.
It offers many features that can appeal to a wide variety of users. Let me briefly highlight most of the important ones.
In addition to all the features listed above, it is also worth noting that you can also find a Movim mobile app on F-Droid.
If you have an iOS device, you might have a hard time looking for a good XMPP client (I’m not aware of any decent options). If you rule that out, you should not have any issues using it on your Android device.
For desktop, you can simply use Movim’s public instance, sign up for an account, and use it on your favorite browser no matter which platform you’re on.
You can also deploy your instance by using the Docker Compose script, the Debian package, or any other methods mentioned in their GitHub page.
While the idea of decentralized social media platforms is good, not everyone would prefer to use it because they probably do not have friends on it and the user experience is not the best out there.
That being said, XMPP clients like Movim are trying to make a federated social platform that a general consumer can easily use without any hiccups.
Just like it took a while for users to look for WhatsApp alternatives, the craze for decentralized social media platform like Movim and Mastodon is a possibility in the near future as well.
If you like it, do consider making a donation to their project.

This scratches a long time itch for me. I *never* got why “twitter” wasn’t an open standard like email or web.
I'm just sayin'....
Deployable on docker? Cool! Imma gonna spin up an instance and give it a try.
Thanks for posting. I’ve mostly been looking at activitypub, ipfs, and similar but xmpp does look promising and has a decent list of applications according to elsewhere on that site.
I’m just trying to give people options to get off of Twits and FacePalm.
I like the decentralized options myself. That’s going to be the future to prevent bigtech nazis from completely stifling free speech and conservative opinion.
BTW thanks for posting this thread. This would’ve gone completely under my radar if you hadn’t posted it.
That was what caught my eye.
I downloaded Movim and am setting up the stack to run it on one of my lab virtual machines now. I have some time in the next few days to kick the tires on it to decide whether or not I like it. If anything, it gives me something to keep my eye on now that I see a decentralized internet starting to take shape. That bodes well for our side. :-)
I agree that we need decentralization or at least federalization. Please keep us posted on what you learn in deploying movim.
tsk, tsk, here are the approved statements:
1. She wasn’t shot, she committed suicide by cutting her own throat on the broken window glass
2. She shot herself with an invisible gun.
3. She choked to death on a chicken nugget and the blood was from an emergency tracheotomy.
4. She is alive and well in the federal witless protection program.
Yes, I’m being sarcastic.
I signed up. I think we will need europe to be able to have free speach type postings.

Tried MeWe . Every thread I opened was a click bait selling a Trump coin. Dumped it.
A group of us have been using qTox and it works well for group messaging. P2P highly decentralized, encrypted and onion protocol. not fancy but works well as a group chatbot.
Have you tried this yet Ace? I installed it on Mint 20. I builds a local server and database for you with a local webscript installed. Important note... During set up it asks if you want it HTPPS or HTTP as protocol. In this step it also shows the URL path to were it will be found local with your chosen browser to connect later. MAKE NOTE of that URL path while you are there, because it is almost impossible to find where it is later after it is installed. :)
I have not tried Movim yet. I don’t do social media (unless you count FR as social media). Never had Twitter or FacePalm.
I think you can set it up so that only a group of chosen members can participate in your site and circle. My first impression of movim is a fancy zeronet.
What I don’t know yet and still need to explore is if it is encrypted like zeronet or not. I don’t do facebook or Twitter either. Never liked the “follow” concept. Always liked the full community of a forum like here.
Appreciate you sharing it and thought it was worth experimenting with for future knowledge. It may be possible to set up a similar forum in that also. But just wanted to share that important note in case anyone else gives it a shot. :)
