As we drove through Warrenton, Virginia (population 9,913), it struck me and my husband, Scott, at the same time. In a quarter mile stretch of road, there was every major chain that has come to define the American fast-food landscape. We were hungry. We didn’t want to get COVID-19. I had forgotten the frozen pizzas in our rush to get out the door. And neither of us had tried the famous Popeyes’ Chicken Sandwich that had sold out across the country in 2019. We set our minds to our new mission.
First, we devised rules:
At every venue, we would order a “meal” with fries and a drink.
We would get sandwiches in random order by getting our meals as they appeared driving up one side of the road and then turning around and driving down the other.
Upon being handed our bag of deliciousness, we would immediately pull into the closest parking spot, each take one bite of sandwich and a french fry.
After sampling each fresh sandwich, we would then pull out all of the sandwiches at the end for a side by side comparison.
But we forgot to agree on a pretty important rule: What were we actually judging here? Best chicken, best chicken sandwich, or best chicken sandwich meal? As you will see below—we didn’t discover this problem until we shared our rankings. Marital discord ensued.

Last time I was near Church’s somebody had driven over the ordering station, I went to chicken express
Wendy’s in first? Locally it seems like they’ve shrunk the chicken for their 2/$5 sale but kept the cooking time the same, so it is not only smaller but way overcooked. That was the last three times so it is not just a one shot problem. Even on sale I think I’ll pass.
That’s a great story!
I avoided DC all mylife
Warrenton isn't DC. Trump won there by 30 ponts.
I do like those! The only other thing that our local BK is worth eating is their gravy and biscuits. Wendy’s is probably the best chicken sandwich consistently. I like Chik-filet but since they got woke and went gay I’ve not ate there in years.
Ahhh.... meat paste tacos, so bad they’re good. Two for 99 cents at BK. Still get them on occasion.
“Wendy’s, Popeyes, both my choices if available. I’m down on Chik-Fila, not available anywhere near the capital of NY, Albany, unless you drive 3 hurs North to Plattsburgh o 3 hours south to the rotten apple.
So they decide to open in Albany NY. Where? The airport. You must have a flight in or out to have access, so that’s pretty bad.”
We’re in the Cap District as well. Before my company shutdown business travel, the MO was to pick up 6 - 10 sandwiches (plain, but lotsa pickles on the side and handfuls of their mayo packets) after the flight home so we could have dinner and freeze the rest.
We discovered a closer one on the way to visit friends in Mass - right off I-90 in Chicopee. It’s about 1 hour and a half from us, so a little far for lunch, but definitely worth the stop if you are heading in that direction.
. Total agreement.
Ah, yes, the famous frosty mugs. I hate to tell you this, but one of my regular tasks was to skim the bugs off the top of the giant vat of root beer. The root beer was made in-house from sugar, flavored syrup and water, all mixed up in a special vat with a built-in stirring assembly. The insects loved it, so a special skimmer was kept on hand to scoop them off the surface every couple of days. I always had the iced tea, no sugar.
If you get a chance, “Jack in the Box”, has a to die for Chicken Sandwich, prefer the spicy!
They were always in dicey neighborhoods... but damned good fried chicken.
“Bojangles is my favorite fried chicken place.”
Me, too. I really like their “bowls” - rice with delicious chicken on top.
I like the beans and rice at Popeye’s. Never had a problem getting it, or any attitude.
Cfa...too costly...good chicken...sandwich ok...won’t go back till they reassess why they exist...
Love Popeyes...I ask for no mayonnaise and dip it in the hot sweet dipping sauce....very good.
Popeyes beats CFA. Bigger piece of chicken, some mayo and good bun. I mean its just better and more filling to eat hands down
i would imagine the salad would be ok- i had a burger, cheese burger- like i mentioned though, it could be my system, or something changed i n the ingredients, or that particular shop- i just know i won’t eat there again- and if i get another Wendy’s burger, I’ll wait till i get home to eat it, just incase-
Yep, hit it when returning from ME, Boston or the Cape.
