Down Under

Happy Australia Day to all our readers Down Under. The national holiday is, in fact, on Tuesday, but for all I know it's already Tuesday there, or possibly Wednesday, in which case Happy Australia Day for yesterday - or, as the depraved nutters at the nation's state broadcaster say, "Happy Invasion Day". Not being able to visit the Lucky Country is one of the things I've most missed in this last year of lockdown, but I hope to see it once more before I die, if the Vegemite Curtain is ever lifted.

As you know, we always like to have an Oz song for Australia Day. The story behind "Waltzing Matilda" is in my book A Song for the Season, and, what with one thing and another, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" doesn't seem to get played as often as it used to. So in lieu of those, altogether now:

Do you come from a land Down Under Where women glow and men plunder?

Good question. Men At Work came from a land Down Under and in January 1983 they were on top of the world: "Down Under" was Number One not only in Oz but also in the United Kingdom and in the United States, and to this day Men At Work are the only Australian band ever to have topped simultaneously both the UK and US singles and albums charts.

Do you come from the Land Down Under, where the rivers flow and the men chunder?

For those unfamiliar with "chunder" it's British (and presumably Australian) slang for "puke".

You are too young! This 1960’s group from down under knocked the Beatles off of the charts with the song below.

I think they are all still with us to this day! One of my favorites of all time.

Judith Durham has one of the best singing voices I have ever heard.
To Styen one of the few big concerts I have attended was one with Men at Work they were good but not in the same league with the Moody Blues or Kenny Rodgers among a few others.

Judith Durham was proof there is a living god. The beautiful woman surrounded by 3 big brother protective types where she could thrive. The big bass player looked crazy. It’s what you need to keep the bad guys away. I’ll out-crazy you.

The bass player, Athol Guy, is a conservative and served two terms in Australia’s parliament. Bruce, Keith, Athol and Judith. Love me some Seekers.

Yup! I occasionally pose this trivia question to people: “Which nation has an ‘unofficial anthem’ that contains a word meaning vomit/puke/throw-up?” Nobody EVER guesses the answer to that one.

About to run down to the market and get some snags and lamb loin chops for the bbq tomorrow (Still early afternoon on Monday here in Western Australia, the state bigger than Texas and Alaska combined).

Beautiful weather about 24C (75F). Will have family and friends over, maybe even a block party. Plenty of beer and other alcohols. A great day.
