A recent survey has determined that over half of Americans are ready to switch to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service. This was despite only 5% of internet subscribers in the United States being connected via satellite today.
The study was conducted by Reviews.org, which asked respondents whether they would consider getting on board with Starlink once the satellite internet service is fully set up. As it turns out, over half of those surveyed stated that they’d be signing up for the Starlink Beta program, despite the $499 cost of the satellite dish and the service’s current $99 per month fee.
Interestingly enough, 55% of the study’s respondents who do not use satellite internet today noted that they would stay with Starlink permanently if the system’s connection was faster, even if its price was higher than their current internet service provider. Over 40% of the respondents also stated that they would stay with Starlink if SpaceX would allow subscribers to make payments on the satellite system instead of an upfront $499 fee.
Average internet costs in the United States today stand at 57.2 Mbps for about $65 per month, which translates to a $1.13 per Mbps rate. Starlink is more expensive at $99 per month, but considering that the system provides average speeds of 103.1 Mbps at its present state, SpaceX’s satellite system is actually cheaper on a per Mbps basis.
What really sets Starlink apart from current internet service providers in the United States is its low latency, which allows the system to perform much closer to what subscribers receive with cable internet. Current Starlink latency averages 39 milliseconds with download speeds of about 79.5 Mbps as of October 2020. This is over three times the best download

I use Viasat now, I will switch as soon as the new system is available.
I was an early adopter for both DSL and fiber. DSL was somewhat painful. I understood my tech issues better than the help desk, which didn’t do much for me. And they were ongoing for a long time, before they got it figured out.
Fiber has been much more pain-free, but not painless. And it’s damn fast!
Ping.
5.56mm
They are advertising a sub 39/msec latency.....You can run most VoIP protocols with that.....
Most LEO sats are over 225/msec.....unusable for latency-sensitive applications.....
We will see if they offer service guarantees on their product.....
“Starlink won’t be lower latency than fiber will it?”
Watch video link in 44, please. Addresses your question. For more info, search is your friend.
This just seems odd to me. Upload has to be severely limited.
They are laying fiber all over the country.
I get 1gps up and down for $69/mo from att
Cable Internet providers, censoring/propaganda websites and D’rats be getting nervous now because of Musk + StarLink + free speech web alternatives.
Watch the D’rats and MSM begin heavily demonizing Musk and his StarLink satellites is 10, 9, 8...
Maybe Musk will join forces with Trump in creating a new, constitutional and patriotic party.
“I get 1gps up and down for $69/mo from att.”
Key phrase: from ATT. How is ATT’s politics?
Yup.
The Dems, fake news media , Big Tech etc are scared of anything they can't control. or whee conservatives can freely express themselves.
With Musk now the richest man in the world, and already looking to set up a human colony on Mars, the Dems are going to have a very nice fight on their hands when (not if) they take on Musk.
The sats are 300 miles or so up for starlink and 20K miles out for the other sat guys. Might be KM.
Bottom line, sat signals are like sniper shots. Lot easier to hit a target at 30 yards than at 2000 yards. Weather impact will be proportionally impacted. Also, latency (round trip time) are impacted as well. Light (Radio waves) may sound fast but at these distances there is serious impact. 30 millisecond vs 300 millisecond round trip time means gamers will do one and not the other.
If I wasn’t on fiber not owned by one of the big telcos/cable companies I would be into it big time.
Over 42,000.
Musk should bar Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc, unless they agree to cessation of censorship.
If you boycott every entity nixed on FR, you’ll have to go to a colonial / Amish era lifestyle.
I live in the boondocks—the hilly boondocks. Cell phone service is sketchy at best. Was on dial-up modem. Now I enjoy high-speed internet—5.5 mbps! Would love to get even the cable speeds, but the cable ends a couple of miles down the road.
The Starlink satellites are essentially a mesh network in low-earth orbit rather than geosynchronous orbit. Starlink is aiming for latencies around 20ms which is better than anything out there other than 5g mm-wave connections.
The biggest hurdle for adoption by people already served by a good land-based internet service is the dish needs a clear view of the sky and is, like other satellite services significantly affected by the weather.
Starlink will fill the void where land-based service or soon to be 5g and 5g mm-wave routers doesn’t fill the void.
Average speeds for those on Starlink is now at between 100 - 150 mbs with latency at 20 - 40 ms. You can actually play online video games with no problem.
That would be great.
Chuckle.
However, he'll probably promote free speech alternatives instead, like his recent Tweet encouraging everyone to switch to Signal.
I use a “super soaker water gun” with windshield de-icer loaded in it. No ladder required. Works like a charm. :)
