THE NATIONAL TROUBLES: The Nomination of Mr. Holt as Secretary of War Sent to the Senate; THE DISUNION MOVEMENT: SECESSION IN THE CABINET (1/18/1861)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Jan. 17.

The Senate, to-day, after confirming several unimportant Consular nominations in Executive session, took up the nomination of HOLT for Secretary of War, and a motion to refer the nomination to the Military Committee, led to a violent and acrimonious debate, in which Senators BIGLER and DOUGLAS were pitted against MASON and SLIDELL. The language used was severe, and, for a while, there seemed a prospect of a personal collision. Mr. HOLT and the President came in for a large share of abuse at the hands of the Secessionists; the motion to refer was defeated, and the nomination will, doubtless, be confirmed to-morrow.

The street is full of exaggerated reports, including one that Senators BENJAMIN and WADE came to blows. This is, probably, unfounded -- certainly it can get no confirmation.

The Senate Committee on Commerce this morning refused to report to the Senate the nomination of MCINTYRE for Collector of the port of Charleston, by the following vote: Ayes -- Meesrs. BIGLER and CHANDLER. Nays -- Messrs. NICHOLSON, SAULSBURY, and CLINGMAN. Col. BAKER, who was absent, would have tied the vote. It is feared that the nomination will now be defeated. The conduct of SAULSBURY, of Delaware, surprises the conservatives.

These factious proceedings to embarrass the Government, in the appointment of a mere Collector, certainly does not indicate any confidence, on the part of the Secessionists, in their power to make a revolution.

Po It is stated, on the authority of a Democratic Congressman, that the Cabinet had a stormy session to-day, growing out of the fact that the President indicating a disposition to fall back on the inaction policy in opposition to the whole Cabinet.

Col. HAYNE has completed his communication which he expects to present to the President to-morrow.

Very interesting! Holt was, of course, nominated by Buchanan. Lincoln did not take office until March 4th.
