1984 Quotes: Every statue and street building has been renamed
AllGreatQuotes ^ | 8 une 1984 | George Orwell

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.

I’m thinking of printing my tag line on a tee shirt.

The last couple of chapters in the book....resembling some Brit romance story gone sour, was just wasted story-telling.

I strongly disagree. The point is made that mere natural human love is not enough to resist an all-out assault using pain and fear. Orwell was an atheist, as well as Winston, but he was an honest enough writer to see that natural forces enough, even a strong human love/desire is not a high enough ideal to resist Ingsoc. The last 30% (including his sinecure, and display to the folks of Airstrip One) illustrates the totality of his defeat. In the end, he loved Big Brother.

And the fact that Orwell was an atheist, what does that tell you. That he wrote a book basically saying that in the end, there really is no hope, why would an atheist believe anything else?

Correct. He was pretty much on the brink of despair, and yet he felt he had to write. Even though he was an atheist he had enough humanity left in him to want to express himself honestly and well. It’s a shame that G.K. Chesterton didn’t live long enough for Orwell to know well. I think G.K. could have helped him along. Waugh was not enough.

The Left used it as an instruction manual.

Once this nation turned from God, it was easy pickings.
