'We are simply not the best,' Montreal restaurateur says of his very honest menu

'This one is not THAT good' Aunt Dai offers a mix of authentic and North American Chinese food. And Fei tries to be very clear about what's what.

"Don't let the name fool you, this one is NOT authentic Chinese food," he warns patrons of his Hēi Jiāo, a.k.a. black pepper stir fry. "True story, one customer got really mad because it's not so Chinese since he visited Sichuan China before."

But that doesn't mean Fei only likes the traditional fare. After some cajoling from his customers, he added General Tao chicken to the menu, with the following description:

"I am no expert on North American Chinese food but I like our General Tao a lot, a lot more than what I would have thought."

Feigang Fei recommends against the orange beef at Aunt Dai. (auntdai.com) He told As It Happens that he'd never tasted General Tao until they put it on the menu.

"Even today, nobody in China has heard of that dish at all," he said. "But after I [tried] it, it's really good."

The orange beef, though? That one's skippable.

Authentic Chinese and Mexican food is generally terrible. The North American versions are much much better.

Dunno. Mexican street food tacos are great. Alberto’s in San Diego is great. El Mojado (really) in San Marcos, CA was great.

Better than the bland-ass American-style Mexican food.

Your definitely right about Chinese food. Although Chinese hawker centre in Singapore is great

Oh god no!!! I was horrified by tex mex but I like it now,

they all have their merits.

To me, one of the worst pizza’s ever was on Rome

still, it was memorable and had its merits.

I was pleased to find that the French word for coca cola was coca cola.

Wee wee

Canada doesn’t make sense?

You take that back!

I’ll put a Canadian hex on you!

May General Tso’s chicken hop off your plate and start dancing with the green beans!

Grouper is actually very, very good, IMHO.

Worst so-called pizza I ever had was in Italy.

Because there's no cat in it.

'We are simply not the best,' Montreal restaurateur says of his very honest menu

"What's your name?"
"Al"
"Al what?"
"You've heard of Alexander the Great?"
"Yeah."
"Well, I'm Albert, the Pretty Good."

Little worse than an overly sweet orange beef, but done right? Then can be quite tasty, though significantly lower margin for a Chinese restaurateur than Gen. Tao’s bird.

Ontario is in lockdown currently. Dining out is a thing of the past for now.

You brought up something that completely annoyed me about an incredible number of people in Montreal—the feigning of not understanding English.

I was there multiple times, over a week each time. This was when everyone still had to be 100% proficient in English. The percentage of people I “had” to repeat, then pantomime, to, was over 60% of all initial contacts at restaurants and stores.

I couldn’t prove they had any proficiency in English and I was a guest in their establishment, so I put up with it.

It’s like liberals in restaurants here, but I didn’t notice spit in anything.

That also reminds me of a common practice in Montreal—placement of stiff paper ads under windshield wipers for escort services while at hotels.

Every time I got them and pulled them off the next morning.

That complete meal, without anything alcoholic, was over $120 Canadian. I had been complaining about how bad so much food was and the guys at the company insisted on getting me out at places which they believed had “good food.”

That was one place that actually did have good food.

Of course, a meal with grouper, at least now, is far cheaper, here. At least it was a whole cooked fish, the size of a slightly bigger dinner plate, with fin and head.

You described that very well. Yes, it is as good as you say.
