THE NATIONAL CRISIS: Uncertainty as to the Reinforcement of Major Anderson; Editorial: Who Rule the South?-Where Lies the Strength of the Disunion Movement? (1/15/1861)

WASHINGTON, Monday, Jan. 14.

A Cabinet meeting was held to-day, but no one knew the object of the visit of Messrs. HAYNE and HALL, who arrived from Charleston at 4 o'clock. Neither has seen the President yet.

I am informed the operations relative to affairs at Charleston are suspended until to-morrow. On the other hand there are ominous whisperings that the President is receding from his recent firmness, and that no more troops will be sent to Fort Sumter. Another rumor is that the President is disposed to accede to a proposition from Gov. PICKENS for the absolute suspension of all forcible demonstrations in the Harbor for sixty days, and for the return of Major ANDERSON to Fort Moultrie as the condition of the retirement of the State troops from all the Charleston fortifications. I give the rumor because it is so definite in shape, but confess I have great doubts of its truth. There is great reason, however, to fear that the Administration is weakening again. Personal friends of the President assure me to-night that it is absolutely decided not to reinforce Fort Sumter, because sending more troops there would tend to produce irritation, and reinforcements are unnecessary. The South Carolina Commissioners now here are exceedingly conciliatory and indisposed to bluster.

Nobody was agreed upon in the Cabinet to-day for either vacancy in the Departments.

The President was in the State Department until a late hour last night arranging important dispatches, to go out in the next steamer to our Ministers in Europe, touching the national crisis, and giving instructions to be followed in certain contingencies.

A telegraph was received from Gov. MOORE, of Alabama, by Senators FITZPATRICK and CLAY to-night, saying that the Ordinance of secession, unconditionally and immediate, was passed.
