London Bridge day: the story of Lake Havasu’s grandiose antique
St. George News ^ | January 10, 2021 | Reuben Wadsworth

FEATURE — Anyone wanting a dose of authentic European architecture and ambiance does not have to hop on a plane and “cross the pond” but drive just over four hours south of St. George to what one writer called “The largest antique ever sold.”

That large antique is the London Bridge, which is now located in Lake Havasu City in northwestern Arizona.

It’s not the original London Bridge, nor is it one that inspired the nursery rhyme or song. Even so, it is an impressive sight in the United States.

A series of bridges have spanned the River Thames in London. Probably the most famous one, of nursery rhyme fame, was the stone bridge built by architect and priest Peter of Colechurch between 1176 and 1209, which replaced various wooden bridges that had spanned the river since 50 A.D.

I have friends who live there and have cautioned me about two months of extreme heat. You only go out at night and design a cool cool room in your house.

I live near Disneyland. I’ve got to get out of this place.

He sure did... I remember it. Huge “it’s coming” publicity stunt and then he built a shack. lol

Always wondered if he sucked in investors for that stunt too.

Was there in 2016. Was much more impressed than I thought I would be and much nicer than what replaced it in London itself. Lake Havasu also looks like a pleasant place to live.

I visited the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City shortly after it opened (I was there in 1976), long before it became a famous tourist attraction. It was dedicated at its new site in 1971. Today, it's the second most popular tourist destination in all of Arizona (can you name #1?).

Opening ceremony in 1971:

I've been to Lake Havasu and London Bridge many times. For years during high school and college, myself and a few friends would travel up there from Tempe to go water skiing in a friend's boat. Great times. Of course, the heat didn't bother us, because we were used to it.

I remember one trip, we met Dan Blocker, the actor who played "Hoss" on the TV series, Bonanza. He was on the dock where we went skiing from and was getting ready to go out on the lake himself. He visited with us for several minutes and was a friendly guy. He died the year after we met him at age 43.

London Bridge was the centerpiece attraction for the new development of Lake Havasu City, developed by Robert McCulloch to attract tourists and residents to the new town. It worked and today Lake Havasu is a thriving city.

A big hole in the ground?

Thanks. Barley Brothers is on the list. If they can do fish and ships right the rest of the menu must be good too.

I’ve been there when is over 120. Bullhead city is the same.

BTW, if you want. Take Highway 68 west out of Kingman towards Laughlin NV/Bullhead City. In Golden Valley there is a place called Great American Pizza.

You will get to meet some real Great American patriots there.

Well, those folks he “sucked in” certainly made a killing. He sold the land around that tent you see in the photo above for around $100 per acre. That is now the among the most valuable land for 300 miles around.

Those that can, DO. Those that can’t teach. Those that can’t do either SNIPE at the successful from the sidelines.

Envy is one of the seven deadly sins.

I didn’t try burgers by the bridge. I have a
Barley Brothers growler, though. Liked the beer, wasn’t too into the food, it was too warm to enjoy eating. 115 on the sidewalk crossing the bridge.

Cool...a “London Bridge” where you aren’t liable to be mowed down or stabbed to death by a Muslim psychopath.

Yes, the residuals ended up good. Built a town where there was none. And spring break is fun. :)
