The internet upstart GAB , which is threatening the entire big tech eco-system,just announced they are planning on launchinga new gab phone!
OK, a phone is nice, but what carrier will support it?
And if they do, expect the FCC to step on them.
Nope..nope..carriors don’t want to lose cell use money..hee hee
You can just download apps you use
Me too..new is not better..just more messed up
Seriously? Your batteries last four years? The last two times I changed batteries wasn’t much fun and I won’t pay someone else to do it. My phone batts🔋tend to last around 18 months.
The age of apps is over. Mobile friendly sites rule.
OTOH, if you want the duopoly, feel free ...
Games and apps are cute. Do we want cute or freedom?
For instance, do you want a Free Republic app? Why not?
This is not a clever idea. In addition to being a crappy device, it’s going to be very easy to disable these phones en masse.
Guess I’ll hold off on that Oneplus 9 Pro. They were finally supposed to have a decent camera.
Your best bet is OSX. The only downside, really, is the cost of the hardware. In terms of usability and stability, it can’t be beat (developer since 1979 and have worked with Linux since Slackware was introduced).

Freedom of course. But you don’t start with decade-old junk technology, lacking features even a phone released a decade ago would have had.
I want functionality and usability. Something that all Linux-based phones lack. Crap, 10 or more year old technology, crap worthless applications. Barely usable as a ‘smart device’. Looked back at 2010 phones. Many had higher specs.
Or I guess you just make voice calls and some SMS messages?
And eff “responsive web sites” pretending to be apps. Most of that Shiite is/are developed by H1B Indian garbage.
And yes, a FR app would be great. I hate doing anything browser-based if I can help it.
Your best bet is OSX

No doubt, but Apple effed that up with their M1 chip and non-Intel compatibility. No more bootcamp and no more eGPU compatibility. Not running crap in Rosetta emulation, no matter how good Apple claims it is.
You can pry my 16” loaded MacBook Pro from my cold-dead fingers.

Why would you even consider a Chicom-owned and developed device?
I bought my daughter the new Air with the M1 chip, and it’s impressive. Unless you’re a developer who needs to develop x86 software, e.g., in a Linux VM, I think the new machine will do fine.
Whatever. I’ve been using Linux as my desktop for over a decade. I have a rugged tablet with Windows on it for auto repair software and a scan tool but it’s used rarely. I use Kubuntu daily and updates are a breeze. No 20 minutes waiting for windoze to restart. No need to even restart 99.9% of the time.
Those “real apps” for phones you’re speaking of all track you and gather personal data. I’ve installed a few on our Android phone and the things they want access to, they shouldn’t need.
Go ahead and stick with the big names. Sign up for twitter and facebook while you’re at it. Might as well switch to the dem party while your at it and take whatever covid vaccine Bill Gates, the population fan, recommends.
I use Windows 7 pro when I have to but I’ve got it set for no updates and it never goes on the internet. Runs fast like it’s brand new that way. I use Kubuntu for daily use.
As far as a phone, I don’t need apps because all I do with a phone is call and text.
I also gave info on GrapheneOS that work on the Pixel line of phones and is compatible with all 3rd party Android apps.
So tell me what important phone apps you can’t live without. It’s a damn phone. Call, text, camera. What else?
Usability. I click an icon and start a program. If you need or have gotten used to proprietary windows software, then oh well. Modern versions of Linux work for most people. In a workplace with special programs other than email, web browsing, word processing, probably not. Windows has had the market cornered for decades. No way around that for most business purposes but for a personal computer or tablet, there’s no reason to support MS with it’s bloatware and data mining.

Windows x64 mainly with native accelerated graphics. Parallels just cant do it. Unity3D (uses DOT.NET extensively) and Unreal Engine simply doesn’t target ARM processors. Rosetta II and games development/ 3D modeling just doesn’t cut it.
Remember Windows RT that tried it. Super walled garden approach.
Your right. I’ll get one from one of those “free” countries that don’t use hardware compromised by the Chicoms.

For starters, no Skype, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp Business, Viber, Zoom or any other VOIP software that the rest of the world uses to communicate.
No GPS moving map support (i.e. Google Maps or Rand McNally). I drive a lot and the age of paper maps is long-gone.
Call? Will you pay my IDD bill to the Poland, Ukraine, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc? VOIP is free. Overseas friends, family or clients will not call in on a standard voice line. It will be hundreds a month. A single 30 minute standard phone call from Colorado to Manila was over $100. And video conferencing on a phone call is well, impossible
SMS. Text? $0.40 a message for most places in Asia. Likewise... VOIP messaging is free.

Message me when Linux for the desktop has prior IDEs and applications for 2D/3D content creation and games development. Right now, it’s a big steaming pile of manure. Open-source software always has been and always will be. Including foundation supported software like Blender. If it’s not fully compatible with Maya, 3DMax or Modo, it’s trash. No Unity, Unreal or Lumberyard support.
Additionally, message me when Linux has proper Games support. The Linux-based Steam-OS was such garbage no one adopted it (Alienware tried, Windows-based Alienware Alphas outsold Linux-based ones 100:1 (people slicked their Linux-based ones and installed Windows due to the sheer lack of Linux games (it’s like 10,0000:1 on Steam). And most Linux ports were trash, cut down versions of the Windows versions.
Can’t go wrong with Samsung or LG. None made in China.
Perfect time for Black Berry to get the BB10 system up again.
That OS was great. I still use a BB today. The BB10 Classic. I love that phone.
Apple and Google have spit in the face of every conservative.
