California Is Closing the Door to Gas in New Homes
Scientific American ^ | 1/04/2021 | Anne C. Mulkern

California's top energy bosses soon will decide when to snuff out natural gas flames in new homes.

The seismic move toward omitting some gas appliances comes as the California Energy Commission retools state building codes for energy-efficient homes.

The agency now plans to tighten rules on natural gas for home heating and hot water, a code update that would take effect in 2023.

Environmental groups want a complete ban on natural gas in new homes, but the state commission has signaled that isn't likely right now.

The California Building Industry Association, a trade group whose members develop 85% of new buildings in the state, is girding for ever-tougher rules over the next five years.

"The writing's on the wall," said Bob Raymer, technical director with the industry group. "They're going to want electric space and water heating come 2026."

It started with no new natural gas fireplaces in homes. This extended to no natural gas fireplaces on (fancy) patios.

Now no natural gas inside the homes for heat and cooking, forcing families to pay exorbant electric fees that are already artificially inflated and will never go down in price, regardless of decades of promises that ‘natural resources’ would create “dirt-cheap” electricity.

I have lived in all-electric homes for over 40 years...

And just like magic a bureaucrat will wave his magic wand and provide endless clean electricity.

No, there are not rolling blackouts on a regular basis. A few times a year, when the Santa Anna winds come up, they’re starting to institute that stupid policy. That being said, this ban on gas in new homes it’s a stupid policy too. How long will it be till they insist the rest of us retrofit our old homes to suit their vision of the future?

“So what can new home owners eat?”

Don’t worry about it because pretty soon California will ban homeownership.

This will get everyone into the upper tiers of the billing. Which means your electric bill is going to go through the roof!
Get used to 400 to 600 dollar electric bills each month.

Electric cars seem to do OK in places that have year around mild climates (NorCal for instance).

But they have a long way to go to be truly capable in hot and cold zones. That’s a range killer. Tesla has come up with a heat pump for their latest models to help this out, but that system has a lot of reliability issues already. (Having had a house with a heat pump I’m totally not surprised.)

They won't have to. They will simply keep adding regulations, fees and taxes on the gas distribution companies until they have to charge more than anyone is willing to pay to break even and all go out of business.

I just remember when Grey Davis was in charge out there and the serious power problems that Californians had. I have family in LA and Marin counties. We talk a lot.

Thanks for the mention. I’m sure there are a number of
environments where the electric cars won’t work.

In those environs, they shouldn’t be the answer to people’s
needs.

Some common sense has to prevail. Of course, what am I
saying these days? Common sense? Good luck with that.

I guess I’m just not a change person. However, I do change as society changes at least technologically. So I suppose if the future changes happen, I will go along with the tide. You helped explain my two major issues with electric cars perfectly. Cost and charging always were the turn offs for me. It seems everyone working on this, at least seem to recognize these issues. Thank you for the overview. It was a wonderful read.

“I used to think Californians were “just more liberal” than the rest of us!

But I realize now, the one-party control and ideological bubble is maintained through electoral fraud and manipulation.

Its why the leftists there can be so much more confident in their aggressive policies.”

There are a lot of us local Californians, who are thinking the same re electoral fraud across California.

Old creosote soaked railroad timbers also make excellent heat. Easy to ignite, burns hot, and slow.

As a bonus, some also have tar soaking, for that extra flavorful aroma.

Best part, can store them outside in the rain, they don't soak up water like regular wood!

As usual these actions will drive up the value of our current homes which are protected by Prop 13 in keeping the basically the same original property taxes as long as we own the home. We replace all of the old gas furnaces/stoves/? with new gas applliances before the new rules come in.

Now, with the new prop 19, we can sell or trade homes 5 times in the state of California and keep the original property taxes.

Up to now, I and millions of California homeowners/voters have felt that it was due to us being smart conservative home owners/voters that prop 13 and 19 became law..

Maybe not.

Prop 13 property tax protection puts the onus of new future taxes on new comers all ready living in inflated home costs.

Now prop 19 will allow them/us to buy more California homes at the low tax rate.

New restrictions like only all electric new homes will drive up the prices of our gas heated homes.

Our house was built in 1978, all electric except for the water heater and hvac. Our electric bill runs us at least $600 in the summer. In the winter it’s still $200 and sometimes more. 2000 sq ft house with a pool. The electric bill just keeps going up. We live in the Central Valley where it sometimes gets to over 110 degrees in the summer.
