Child’s remains found in wall of Pacolet residence, coroner says [SC]

PACOLET, S.C. (WSPA) – An investigation is underway after a child’s remains were found in the wall of a home in Pacolet on Saturday.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said his office responded Saturday night to the home, located on Milliken Street, regarding possible remains being found within a wall of a residence.

Clevenger said the house was being remodeling when the remains were found.

In his 30 years as the Spartanburg County Coroner, Clevenger said this is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

“It does shock the conscience of most people,” Clevenger said. “I would say 99.9% of the people, it would definitely shock them, but we move forward.”

The investigation is in the beginning stages, but Clevenger said they believed the remains have been concealed for a long period of time.

“We have already talked to our pathologist and our anthropologist about this. We’re going to refer it to the anthropologist, forensic anthropologist, and it takes an amount of time to be able to catalogue all the bones,” Clevenger said.

The coroner’s office will follow up after the exam with law enforcement to determine other aspects of the investigation. He said anthropology exams take much longer than pathology exams and it could take several months to obtain the report from the forensic anthropology in this case.

“We are human first and foremost, but we have to try and gain as much information, make sense out of any scene that we’re on and make a good solid decision on which direction we need to go,” Clevenger said.

If there is foul play involved, law enforcement will have a larger hand in the investigation.

We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more. Check back for updates.

How could foul play NOT be involved???

A kid doesn’t seal themselves up inside a wall alone...or on purpose.

The link has a banner that mentioned fetal remains. So this was a preborn human, unless that banner was written in error, which is a possibility given how lame our media is.

Not impossible, though. If a child goes missing, who looks in the walls?
I’m shrimp size myself and when inspecting properties I’m usually the one sent into crawl spaces.
Kids will explore.
However, most likely this was foul play.

Anthropology is the study of human societies and culture. It can also be the study of human biological and physiological characteristics and their evolution. But it seems an off term for this investigation.

“If there is foul play involved...”

The media sure picks odd times not to make assumptions....too bad President Trump doesn’t get that level of benefit of the doubt...sheesh.

Although “fetal remains” changes the picture a tad.
Looks like a prior occupant didnt want to disclose a birth or failed birth?

Our local news was saying the remains may be decades old.

How dumb is that statement.

You had a quick eye to see that. In my phone browser, the video started immediately and the “fetal” reference flashed by in a split second. Had to go back to re-watch. That was a MAJOR element in the story and not repeated in the written article. Odd.

In Pacolet, SC, Milliken St. has a limited number of similarly looking houses, which records indicate were built around 1915 - 1920.

So the "fetal remains" (the term used by the coroner) may have been been in the wall for up to a century.

For identification, officials might check the Spartanburg County voting records to see if a person has voted straight-party Demonicrat from that address for the last few decades, even though the house has been owned or rented by different people.

Very astute observations. Pacolet retains some vestiges of the stereotypical “mill town” from the heyday of the textile industry. Company housing, company store, and all of that.

Likely depends on how old the house is and whether or not the county has the experience to do the job well without assistance.
