I lived on Grosse Ile, MI for a number of years. One neighbor used to catch snapping turtles all the time in the canal behind our houses. Some with shells the size of garbage can lids!
He used to cut their heads off and hang them off a tree limb in the back yard. He offered numerous times but I just couldn’t eat any.
I couldn’t imagine that the Detroit River was clean enough to eat turtles out of! But I had no problem eating the walleye that I caught!!
Close to all my family. Ya, I don’t ever remember the Detroit River being clean. We used to go to a restaurant years ago in Luna Pier in the Monroe area. Loved it, tried the frog legs and didn’t like, the turtle soups was amazing, but the brain affect of knowing was never appealing.
I miss being there, but only in the summer.
