In Stimulus Battle, Donald Trump Was No Match For Mitch McConnell, Who Shaped His Presidency
Newsweek ^ | Dec 31 2020 | Bill Powell

President Donald Trump will be leaving Washington soon, but the most powerful Republican of the past four years isn't going anywhere. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, says a former member of the White House staff who advised Trump throughout the first three turbulent years in office, "was sort of Trump's 'Washington whisperer.' He offered quiet advice, and provided critical help on some very big stuff," says the former staffer, who requested anonymity in order to talk candidly. ''You could call him kind of a co-president."

Much of Trump's legacy, when it comes to domestic policy at least, will be fleeting. Many of his signature initiatives—building a wall at the Mexican border, restricting immigration, and implementing broad economic deregulation—were enacted by executive order, and much of it will be swept aside by his successor. The transformative parts of Trump's domestic record are largely McConnell's work. The Senate majority leader took the political neophyte under his wing when he arrived in Washington four years ago, played a central role in his most important achievements, and is now at odds with Trump in his final days in office.

The Senate majority leader's achievements include the appointment of three conservative Supreme Court justices—made possible before the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch by the majority leader's implementation of the so called "nuclear option," the elimination of the 60-vote requirement to end a filibuster for nominees to the high court. It also includes the appointment of 224 federal judges nationwide. (Since 1976 only Ronald Reagan, who served two terms, appointed more.) McConnell got the 2017 tax bill passed narrowly in the Senate, which Trump supporters credit with powering a strong economy that, they believe, would have led to his re-election were it not for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Compared to Obama- who was totally ruled by Reid and Pelosi- President Trump was much more successful at getting his/our way.

Haha. Maybe the funniest thing I’ve ever read here. Obama got near everything he wanted from a Dem Congress. They would not have dreamed of blocking his agenda as the GOP Congress did to POTUS. Frankly, China Mitch was accommodating of Obama time and again because that’s waht his donors wanted. Most infamously on the on the McConnell-Obama Iran deal.

“Trump will go down in hist as the world’s greatest leader in the 21century”

I agree. I believe Winston Churchill was one of if not the greatest leader of all time and look what happened to him immediately after the WW2.

Trump has accomplished more in his first 4 yrs than any other President in my very long life has in 8. e has also changed politics in a way not yet fully understood by many. If any Conservatives were paying attention he has showed them how to win.

Gorsuch got one of these bootlicking Fake News hagiographies right after he voted to give Trannies rights under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It’s a time honored swamp thank you from the left when Republicans do what they want.

The fact is Mitch “We’re going to repeal Obamacare root and branch” Mitchell has miserably failed to representing those who elected him. Now amount of Fake News spin will change that.

LOL!
Why on earth would Harry and Nancy do anything but support their obedient subordinate?

Obama did only, and exactly, what he was told to do.
Can’t believe the media convinced many fools that Obama- the ultimate turtle on a fence post- was in charge.

He figures he has six more years of mass corruption to become as rich as...oh say Biden or Pelosi, then give the final middle figure to the country he has raped for his entire adult life and head off to Forgotten Land, richer than sin.

This is just anti-Trump agitprop. Aside from judges, Mitch has not achieved much of anything. He may cost the GOP senate their 2 seats in Georgia...so there’s that.

That was Dirty Harry and the dastardly democrats.

McConnell is done.

Partner, I just hope you are correct on this one.

This guy McConnell has a personal net worth over $40 million dollars plus and it could be bigger than $40 Milllion dollars.

This no. of $$$ is insane but if we look into it deeper you can see he has been in Congress way too long.

If you do not think that he is on the Gravy Train then you must be a Chicom Spy or sympathizer.

Dems all play for the same team. Don’t be a simpleton. Reid happily got rid of Senate tradition to ram through Obama’s judges.

Partner, yup that is the life of a Senate Majority leader.

In our opinion he is the worse Senate Majority leader ever in our book.

Partner, Dirty Harry was beaten up by his brother so that was good enough for a lot of folks.

Dirty Harry said he fell off of his Treadmill, which was just too much to take for this idiot who BTW was living on the LV strip hotel. We all just laughed at getting beat up by a brother and Dirty Harry had bragged that he had boxed before.

Talk about gravy train.
