A sheriff’s deputy in Virginia has been fired after authorities said that “disturbing comments” were posted by his account on a conservative social media website.

The Washington Post reports that the Prince William County sheriff’s office announced the firing on Saturday.

I swear sometimes I’ll be TALKING in my room about buying something, and an hour later, Facebook is giving me ads about the thing we were talking about. (seriously, I assume that we do a google search at some point, and that is what triggers Facebook to know I was interested).

But I do the multiple-facebook accounts, not for anonymity per se (although only one had my real name until someone “reported” me and Facebook tagged a character account I have with my full name, I’m still annoyed at that).

My family account only has family members, and I never really post there. And I have 3 other accounts, each for groups I associate with, so that my posts about steampunk and fashion are seen by peoplle who are interested in that, and they don’t have to see my posts about halloween, or my posts about theme parks.

I presonally feel like Facebook could make some money if they added this as a feature, you make one account, but subdivide it, and accept friends to your sub-accounts, and those friends only see things you post to your sub-accounts. (I realize you can make “friend lists” and post things to the friend lists, but that doesn’t impact your likes/dislikes, or your comments which can’t be filtered easily).

> I cancelled my FB account two years ago. I realized that FB was drawing conclusions about me NOT based on what I posted, but on what my friends were posting. Guilt by association.

Indeed! I live and work in Ithaca, NY, City of Evil, Socialist Haven of the Northeast. The vast majority of my family, friends, and co-workers are all rabid Democrats. There's just no reasoning with them. I created a FB account a decade ago, and gave up trying to use it -- haven't posted to it in five years, haven't even logged into it in like forever. I can't stand the crap people post, makes me crazy.

The only reason I haven't closed the account is all the questions I'd get about 'why'? That would only start arguments. So it's just going to sit there and get moldy, until such time as it becomes more of a liability than the questions.

Do you have a microphone on any of your computers? If so, whether or not you think it's turned off, it could be turned on without your approval, and listening to your conversations.

Just sayin'.

I actually created three FB accounts long ago. The first used my real name for "public" visibility, the second one had a fake name for a few private friends/family, and a third with a fake name and no contacts, for use in verifying what "the public" can see of my other accounts.

The first one is no longer in use by me, I just ignore what other people post to it. The second is no longer in use. And I accidentally locked myself out of the third, so it's a zombie -- I can't even delete it.

I hate Facebook. It's a rank sewer, IMO.
