I used to live in Spain and believe me, they do NOT consider themselves of the same stock as latin americans. I had one get very upset when someone described South Americans as Spanish (based on language, not race of course). A friend who traveled there extensively in the '70s said that she asked once if they had corn (maize) and the waiter said "Corn? Bah, corn is for pigs and mexicans!"

The further south you go the more you can see influence of the moors (who were kicked out 500 years ago but still ...) and the gypsys down there. But up north they are more related to gaulic or even celtic stock (in Galicia, at least) than mediterranean.
