Christmas in Florida: Chilly forecast, falling iguanas…

ORLANDO, Fla. -- With unexpectedly cold weather in the forecast and pandemic-related curfews in some places, Florida is about to have a Christmas unlike any other in recent memory, and it may involve falling iguanas.

The National Weather Service earlier this week warned that South Florida could experience the coldest Christmas Day in 21 years. Morning lows on Saturday could drop into the low 30s and 40s degrees Fahrenheit, the weather service said.

“ Brrr! Much colder temps expected for Christmas," the National Weather Service in Miami tweeted earlier this week. “Falling iguanas are possible."

Because they are cold-blooded reptiles, iguanas living in South Florida trees often become immobile in chilly weather, causing them to drop to the ground when the thermometer plummets, though they are still alive.

Easy pickings for the folks that capture them for the pet trade.

When I was growing up, sometimes the news would show orange groves with icicles on the oranges. Usually it was right around Christmastime. Then the anchor would solemnly into that the nation could expect higher citrus prices in the weeks ahead.

At the time, my mother would buy the frozen concentrated orange juice that you would have to mix with water. But when nobody was looking, I'd just scoop it out of the can with a spoon and eat it in the concentrated form. I did not mind eating it that way. It's was like a slush.

Just a random childhood memory.

Florida is cold, meanwhile I'm up in Maine and it is 55 degrees.

My brother is in NC and is enjoying 19 degree weather.

35 here in north Fla this morning with 20 mph wind. Mild compared to our friends in the north I know but plenty cold as far as I’m concerned.

I used to live in Panama City and I remember that we would have about one week in winter where it would get frosty.

10 or 20 years ago we had a 2-week stretch in Orlando where the temp didn’t get above freezing.

Global warming of course.

You ain’t just a kiddin’, boy. If one a them suckers falls outta a tree today, you can expect to get runt over by a dozen Cuban-o men chargin’ in to get him afore he wakes up!

(I’m serious - it happened to me in South Miami’s Tropical Park. I even got invited over for a taste. Yup - chicken.)

Remember the rolling blackouts in Florida around 1986 or so? The year we came to Florida.
