Congress COVID-19 relief bill includes $15 billion for Broadway, small music venues, movie theaters (Cornyn's bailout)

After more than nine months of empty stages, live music venues and theaters in the United States—along with independent movie houses—appear to be headed toward much-needed relief to the tune of $15 billion.

That help, dubbed the Save Our Stages Act, is part of Congress’s $900 billion COVID-19 relief package announced Sunday. As of midday Monday, lawmakers were racing to finalize the legislative text to send it to President Trump’s desk before government funding lapses at midnight. The money set aside for the Save Our Stages Act would assist live music and theater venues, independent movie theaters, and other cultural institutions.

“These are people’s jobs and livelihoods, and they need this help now,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on Twitter.

The relief bill, written last summer by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), earned kudos from a range of sources including the National Independent Venue Association, known as NIVA (which had been pushing for this help for months), and an array of celebrities, such as comedian Jerry Seinfeld.

Cornyn is gifting these liberals 45% of their 2019 gross revenue! It’s a grant, not a loan!

Dear John,

What parts of the bill address Texan’s needs?

Economists say it's too soon to tell the full financial impact the virus will have on individual Texans, on regions with higher concentrations of the virus or on the state economy as a whole. Already, oil and gas prices have plummeted, shaking the state's largest industry. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, that city's largest annual event, halted operations. Conferences scheduled in Galveston and Corpus Christi have pulled out. And local officials in Austin canceled the city's premier event, South by Southwest, sending industries and businesses there into disarray.

See John we have sections of Texas businesses suffering, including local entertainment! So I ask again what did you do for Texas?

Many of these places are small businesses. Whether they support Trump or not, I don’t know. I would tend to doubt it. That shouldn’t matter during CoVid lockdowns. Almost everyone has been hurt by this. Some more than others.

There are lots of little bands who haven’t been able to perform at their local places because of restrictions. Most of these people have day jobs in bars and restaurants. Even during partial opening, the work has been sporadic. I, for one, would love to see live music again.

Considering the vast majority of the entertainment industry across all spectrums, are Proud Progressive Socialists. Shouldn’t American Citizens be Entitled to FREE Entertainment in any and all venues??

I’m with you. Two of my sons are professional musicians and we own two live music venues. Shut down. Was Had to lay off 100. No salaries for owners. Personal guarantees on leases. Might not come back until 2022 the way our “betters” run things. Sad.

As I wrote elsewhere, I go to lots of shows at bars featuring unsigned punk, progressive, metal, and alternative bands. To be sure, there are plenty of leftists - both in the crowd and behind the bar/in the back office.

But there are a goodly amount of right-minded and outright Deplorable folks at such gigs. I learned that not every tatted gal, pierced guy, bouncer, or half-dressed bartender is an Antifa loser etc. They tend to get lumped in with that crowd.

My personal experience is MOST of these folks just want to be left alone, and a healthy chunk of them want to do their thing without a handout or interference from govt. The state shut down these venues and vaporized their livelihood. Indeed, it is utterly despicable that the co-dependent enablers in this shutdown activity were lily-white affluent urban woke snowflakes who kept earning a paycheck from their telecommuting HEPA-filtered home, while largely lower-income and minority hourly-wage individuals saw their jobs get crushed.

I don't know how these bailout funds make their way to the employees and businesses hardest hit. But I've seen worse things in my life. Now, if LiveNation or Clear Channel walk off with zillions, I'll be peeved.

John Cornyn(R-Deep State) needs to be ROASTED, attacked, and diminished for his last 6 years in the SENATE.

Cornyn is supporting the same BROADWAY that LECTURED VP Mike Pence when he went to see the BORING and OVERRATED “Hamilton”.

I’m thinking that these billions going to foreign governments will have Joe’s quid pro quo provision; 25% refunded back which will be gifted to the blue states to balance their budgets.

Sending money overseas defeats the purpose of a STIMULUS for the US economy!!!!

NO money for Burma, Pakistan, Nicaragua, etc.!!!! No money for rich “cultural” venues like the Kennedy Center! Help support struggling American individuals and families, small landlords, small businesses, etc., and thus provide the needed economic stimulus!!!!

Then use the vaccines to end the pandemic, and gets us all back to work, school, church, etc. Let’s have a full Orthodox Pascha on May 2, 2021, with President Trump in office!!!!

Most people in America will never see a Broadway show, or even visit the eastern city coast.

Is Broadway really that important right now when people across America are still trying to find their rent money? Can’t we deal with institutions = people can’t even attend = at a later date - like, when lockdowns are over?
