Investigators say about $50,000 worth of goods were stolen

An upscale consignment store in Carmel-by-the-Sea was robbed in broad daylight on Thursday.

It happened about 2:50 p.m. at Foxy Couture on Seventh Avenue.

According to Carmel police Chief Paul Tomasi, three people went into the store to shoplift items, and, at the time, three employees were inside.

Investigators say punches were thrown and the store was looted. Injuries were minor.

About $50,000 in merchandise was stolen. Tomasi said they are following leads and want to make arrests soon.

The chief said he thinks there were three people inside the store who took the items with two others waiting outside who helped them get away.

An investigation is underway.

Anybody else see a "disconnect" here? How can anyone, after the fact, refer to this as a "shoplifting?" Assault and battery are more-commonly associated with robberies. Further, I should think that stealing $50,000 worth of merchandise would qualify it as "grand theft."

Regards,

Is a theft of property worth $50,000 still prosecutable in CA?

I think if they got in and made off with $50k in merchandise, they weren’t just some meth heads, they had to have skill. And an probably an inside job element.

It hard to imagine being a store owner today. Every customer walks in with a mask on. Scary.

It’s California. Shoplifting anything under $950 is a misdemeanor.
