[...] three people went into the store to shoplift items, and, at the time, three employees were inside. Investigators say punches were thrown and the store was looted. Injuries were minor. About $50,000 in merchandise was stolen.

Anybody else see a "disconnect" here? How can anyone, after the fact, refer to this as a "shoplifting?" Assault and battery are more-commonly associated with robberies. Further, I should think that stealing $50,000 worth of merchandise would qualify it as "grand theft."

Is a theft of property worth $50,000 still prosecutable in CA?

It hard to imagine being a store owner today. Every customer walks in with a mask on. Scary.
