CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two teenage boys are accused of carjacking a 65-year-old woman at gunpoint Tuesday in Rogers Park on the North Side.
The boys, 13 and 15, allegedly threatened the woman with a gun and took her vehicle about 3:50 p.m. after she parked in the 1200-block of West Farwell Avenue, Chicago police said. They were arrested less than half an hour later in the 4700-block of North Racine Avenue.
Both were charged with one felony count each of aggravated vehicular hijacking and aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, police said. They have not been named because they are minors.
The boys are both due in bond court Wednesday.
The city of Chicago has seen the number of carjackings more than double so far in 2020.
Police say carjackings are often crimes of opportunity, and the opportunities appear to be on a dramatic rise.
According to Chicago police, there had been 1,236 carjackings as of early December; an increase of 134% over the same time last year. It's also the highest number since 2002.
It's unclear what's behind the increase, but authorities say many of the perpetrators are juveniles, who face less serious legal consequences.

They’ll keep being criminals and in a few years will qualify for adult charges. Then they’ll spend most of the rest of their lives in prison. See it all the time on First 48. Youts throwing away their lives.
I grew up in West Rogers Park, just a couple miles from there. Back in the '70s, the area at the far north end of Rogers Park was called the "Jonquil Jungle," and it could be a little rough. But I think the jungle has been spreading since then.
The Jungle near Evanston was the worst up there. I did enjoy hanging out at my friends place near the beach, as well as the Indian places on West Devon (which eventually turned into Odessa/Tel Aviv as you moved further west). I was actually on Berwyn near Magnolia in Edgewater one ward south.
Yeah...I guess teens are 18 and 19. These are mere children. With guns.
Right out of high school, a very pretty white lady friend of mine moved to Roger’s Park. She carried aerosol hairspray in one hand and a lighter in the other (in 2007).
I grew up a half-block north of Devon, on Maplewood. That half-mile of Devon between Western and California was pretty much all Jewish businesses when I was growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s and into the ‘70s. Now it is “Little India.” Still a strong Jewish presence between California and Kedzie.
